RMweb Premium Welly Posted July 23, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 23, 2011 Today my mate and I have been snapping London Underground trains ( with official permission ) and needed some lunch in the North London area. We found this chippy opposite the entrance to Queen's Park station called "Mr Fish" and it's simply the best I've had in years! Perfectly fried to the right level of crispness with none of the all too frequent cloying greasiness.
RMweb Premium JZ Posted July 28, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 28, 2011 Just like to add Popeye's at Cheltenham. 90sec's walk from the station.
mason
There are a few across from Skegness Station, the one i went in today called flippers, great fish and chips and for £2.99 i wasnt going to complain Neil
Raffles
Paddington. Out of the exit under Span 4, across Praed Street and straight down until you get to Mickeys. Hellfire chippy; kept me fed on lunch breaks at PAD for the best part of seven years (or until they opened a KFC nearby).
Natalie
In Nuneaton it has to be Wale's which is about 7 mins from the station. Chips are excellent- always cut crinkly, you can get gluten free batter if that is a requirement, mayonnaise or grated cheese available for chips too. Fish is always fresh (it is about as far from the sea as is possible in England though) and is always fried when ordered. Portion sizes good too. RMweb Gold queensquare Posted July 28, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 28, 2011 I would also recomend the one opposite Kidderminster station but my favourite is the Driftwood Cafe, just around the corner from Blue Anchor station on the WSR. Superb fish and chips and a cracking location. Jerry
RJS1977
I remember hearing a story about a steam special that made a water stop at Port Talbot. Whilst the train was stopped, one of the passengers spotted the chippy across the road, and realising the train would be stopping there again on the returned journey, walked down the train taking orders and phoned them through to the chippy "500 cod and chips please, to be delivered to the station at 5:30 this evening," which the chippy agreed to do. On the return journey, though, there was no sign of the food, so he rang the chippy again to find out where it had got to. "Oh," said the owner. "We thought you were joking." AMJ
The one in Barmouth mentioned above is good. Slightly up the line I have had good F&C from the one in Harlech - the downside is that they don't open every day and I have been known to go into Portmadog to get food. In PM going off topic there Chinese and Indian resteraunts & take aways. Perhaps this could become a general guide to eating out near to a station, or do you think that we need threads for each type of eatery? Quite a few stations seem to have a Weatherspoons nearby so you can get a cheap pint of real ale and food prices are not bad either. (Another possiby topic real ale pubs near/on stations.) I realise that for those that work on the railway you can't visit a pub.
1722
Chip shop opposite Crewe Alex. Exit the station, turn left down Nantwich road, followed by the next left down Gresty Road. Past the alex and at the first junction cross the road and there you go. Just don't go between 2 and 3 on a home match day...
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted July 29, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 29, 2011 Mossley Hill - over the road and to the right, 1 min walk. Rock Ferry, out of the station, straight ahead for 1/4 mile, turn right at the church and up the hill, on the left "Dacre Hill", 10-15 mins walk, colloquially (and locally) called the "Greasy Garden" but a cracking chippy. Spent many a time queing up with with the 'order' for all the drivers, guards and secondman waiting for a nosh up in the pub on the corner back in the early '80s. Raffles
Certainly is Nige, although I believe it got sold to some Afghans who now offer Southern Dried Chicken (sic) and kebabs. Odd thing is, the Fish/Pies/Chips etc are still as good as they used to be. I think the other Mickeys (down by St Mary's) closed in the end.

RANGERS
Stuarts on the main road through Driffield is the best chippy I've ever been in, fish and chicken are fantastic. Leave the station and head into town and it's about 250 yds on the right. Alternatives are the one close to Barnetby Station, down the station entrance road and right at the bottom, fish and pies recommended there; or if you fancy a bit of a hike after you get off your train, Seaview Fisheries in North Shore Rd in Skegness are better than any of the town centre chippies (good though many of them are!)
