60026to
Hello and welcome to Hallenby my modest little present day project that I am building in the loft.I have decided to use my Youtube name as it makes things easier for me and hopefully everybody else7 pages of Hallenby can be found on the old forum so I thought that I would start afresh with recent progress on this one.First a brief description:Gauge: OOEra: 2003(ish)-Present DayPrototype: Pilning (very loosely)Location of Layout: See titlePurpose: To relax and play trains and to show other forum members of courseTrackwork: Peco Code 75Layout Dimensions: 14ft x 10ftDuration of Build: 2 years thus farBallast: Woodland Scenics and Builders' sandScenic Products: Mainly WSTraction : Bachmann, Heljan and HornbyRolling Stock: As above plus DapolPower: Digitrax Super Chief (DCC)Buildings: Kit built/bashed, scratch built and ready to plonkAnything I've forgotten: Yes, probably And now for the picciesA heavily modified Metcalfe viaduct was the solution here and when bought with one of their red brick sheets pack it made 'building' this structure a doddle. One of Bachmann's SceneCraft buildings features here and very good it is too.It is starting to look like a depot now.A fine product from Hornby performs depot duties with a ZUV Shark Ballast Plough.Waiting for a 66 to turn up...And there she is 66725.On the other side of the servicing shed 60043 can be found. And finally we move over to the station just as a 153 arrives at platform 2 with a service to Cardiff CentralLots more images can be found on my fotopic sitehttp://www.digital-rail.fotopic.netAnd lots of videos on Youtube just type in Hallenby in the search engine. Many thanks for spending the time to look.Kind regards,60026to, aka Matt 'Godders' Godwin
RMweb Premium Temeraire Posted November 4, 2009 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 4, 2009 Hi Matt good to see you've made the move across to the new site under a different name. I see you went for the topic and not a blog entry then, I created a blog before the topic format appeared but I am thinking of changing as I prefer the thread as before. Hallenby looking good as ever.
60026to
How do Ian, Yeah finally made over onto here dunno why it took so long though, still better late than never Cheers for your kind remarks I'm still working out whats what on here and at least the smileys work on and the image upload is a lot easier than the old one, that's progress I suppose. Cheers for now.
Dmouseair
Good to see you have made the jump across the void..... Thanks for your reply on the old forum, appreciated, shame a lot of your old thread has appeared with question marks which makes it tricky to track back (forgive the pun) for details. I maybe (will be) poaching your site for inspiration amongst other things ( like track plans), great stuff. Have you done a video of the complete layout yet? Keep the pictures coming. :icon_thumbsup2:

Feel free to poach but there are far better layouts on here (or the old one) that I gained inspiration from and all over the internet and of course the real railway world. As for a complete video of the layout, well not quite as the high level storage yard is a tad sparse in the track department and using my current camera makes things a little tricky but maybe Santa might bring me a shiney new JVC MS120 SD or something similar We shall have to wait and see. Poindexter
Hi Matt. Good to see your videos increasing on YouTube and your transference to the new improved RMweb. How do you find your Digitrax equipment now you have been using it for a while? I'm thinking about going for the super empire builder as an upgrade from my present equipment. Do you find your chief intuitive to use? Any regrets about buying it? Cheers Guy
60026to
Hiya Guy, My only regret about my Chief is that I should have bought it years before I actually did . Seriously though it really is a quality piece of kit and after three years it has never let me down and by using 2 DT400 hand throttles I can easily control 4 trains at once that could be 3 too many for some people but not for me The only downside that I have found so far is that when typing in a loco address it doesn't always work first time but thats probably just me as I am probably not pressing the keys hard enough but within a couple of seconds after keying the buttons properly all is fine. Some have commented that the Digitrax instruction manual is a bit of a handful at times but I clearly remember Xmas Day 2006 (when I finally recieved it) that I had 66022 merrily ying, yinging away a short while after opening the kit up and believe me I'm no technical whizz. The only other piece of DCC kit that I have used is Bachmanns E-Z Command which for the money is all right but the Chief belongs to a completely different league. As for the Empire Builder I'm not sure about that one yes it is cheaper than the Chief and it will do a lot that the Chief can but for a little extra cash you will get a real class piece of DCC hardware as I have heard other modellers' comment on the fact that they wish they had bought the chief instead. Hope this is of some use and many thanks for your intrest in my vids and layout James, as for a blog I don't know, maybe later and cheers.
Poindexter
Cheers Matt. I have been doing a bit of reading and I think the Empire will do the job. Just gotta save up for it now!! Do you think its easier to use a Metcalfe viaduct for the retaining walls rather than a Scalescenes kit? Is there scope for increasing the hieght on the viaduct using the brick paper? Athe standard viaduct height is to low for my retaining wall/bridge/viaduct thingy . Guy
60026to
Cheers Matt. Guy The Metcalfe viaduct is very flexible and easy to work with I can't really comment on the Scalescenes stuff as I have never used them. Being that I built the high level baseboards ages ago I had to make some slight alterations to them to fit the viaduct/retaining walls when I was building the kit. I had to remove a couple of lengths of battern so that the top of the arches would fit underneath the boards. The next two images should show you what I mean regarding to removing the pieces of batterns. I did cut off 15mm from the bottom of the arches so that they would fit but I cannot remember the height of the original structure but saying that the height of the Metcalfe kit could easily be raised with their brick sheets covering some stout card placed at the bottom of the arches, doing it that way you could really have any height you require. One thing that I wished I had done whilst building my thingy is that I should have wrapped some of the thinner brick sheets (you get 4 thick and 4 thin in every pack) around the arch columns to hide where the pre-scored angles of the brickwork are. I will later on try to colour the angles to match the brickwork with paint or pencils but hey ho I have had a very long day at work but hopefully this post makes sense Cheers. 60026to
No probs, I'm glad I could be of some help and thanks to all for the positive comments. I had planned on a major track cleaning session with it being my rest day and all but I soon tired of the meths dampened cloth and decided to tinker with one of the bridges on the layout. Please forgive the dodgy photos... After trying one or two methods I opted to go with the above. A piece of 2mm thick plasticard was cut to the length of the original bridge span with a width of 15mm. This was then stuck onto a cutting mat with masking tape (ensuring everything was nice and square). Unused RWP from my Pikestuff Loco Shed were cut equal lengths (15mm) and using the grid of the cutting mat they were glued vertically along the length of the plasticard strip. Addition pieces of Plastruct in varing sizes were also glued to the structure here and there to give it that girder bridge type look. After spraying the whole thing with light grey and brush painting the top guardrail with black paint I then went about 'rusting' the bridge with a mixture of water based paints with different hues. Cocktail sticks and cotton buds were used in the application/removal of rusty type paint and when contented with my afternoons modelling I lightly sprayed the whole thing with Frame Dirt. The two images shown are a tad rushed due to a number of factors but hopefully give a fair indication of my hard earned time up in the loft today. Cheers. RMweb Premium Temeraire Posted December 7, 2009 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 7, 2009 Hi Matt What did the visit to Cheltenham bring then, or has Santa taken them away for now? Any progress recently, I had to go to page 6 to find you!

60026to
LOL !! Cheers Ian your comment it did make me chuckle. Last Friday the wife and I had the pleasure of visiting CMC to see what goodies they had. Boy! oh for those six magic numbers to roll in on any given Saturday We (Santa) managed to buy a few lenghts of Peco Concrete Flexi Code 75 track which I haven't seen anywhere else so the plan is to replace the sleepered track that hasn't been ballasted yet on the high level mainlines, of course we (Santa) only bought four lengths so the track laying gangers' will not have much to do come the New Year I did spot Bachmann's new Southern EMU in the shop, what a beauty but alas there is no place on Hallenby for such a product but DBS 66 ? Yeah why not , I (Santa !) chipped* said shed and now instead of fine tissue paper it is now been wrapped with some garish paper featuring Xmas Puddings and holly etc, etc . Sadly on the progress front there is really nothing to report and many thanks for dragging back my thread back into the fore. Early next year will probably be the next time that I post a photographic (RMWeb/Fotopic) and motion picture (to be found on YouTube) update. Cheers and thank you all for looking * Well, I took the body off and fitted the decoder then the wife programmed the 21 pinner with the address of 6152 and gave 152 a few laps of the lower level. RMweb Premium Temeraire Posted March 2, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 2, 2010 How you doing Matt, any recent progress or has it been too cold up top for you?
60026to
Howdo Ian, Well its been a long time since my last update and there is nothing really to report. Yes it has been rather cold up there (the coldest winter for over 30 years) which makes working in the loft a tad harsh. I have taken a few videos this year with my new camcorder which can be found on youtube and I am very pleased with the positive feedback. I had planned to have two or three modelling days this week but due to that big yellow shiney thing in the sky and a very special brand new purchase that I bought today modelling has had to take a back seat. Cheers for now, Matt.
RMweb Premium Temeraire Posted March 2, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 2, 2010 Matt I had a look at your videos today at lunchtime as it happens. As your in your 40th year now the "brand new purchase" isn't the mid life crisis purchase is it? Motorbike? Sports car? Don't suppose you're going to the Romsey exhibition this weekend are you? No Ian I'll be working this weekend, the next/only exhibition that I plan to go visit will be Warley in November Our summer hols this year has/will take a very large chunk out of my modelling funds and my brand new purchase was essential for me to get to work as my old one was gradually falling to pieces. Zen 1 will debut tomorrow... Sports car... I wish...better learn to drive first though
RMweb Premium Temeraire Posted September 8, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 8, 2010 Its awfully quite over there Matt. Is there nothing to update or show off?
60026to
Yes please forgive the lack of updates but hopefully I shall post a video or two late next week detailing my plans for Hallenby over the next couple of months through to next spring. One thing that I can say now though is that a little spending spree for track 'n' traction is planned for next month. Many thanks, Matt.
