jhock
Thought I would share my attempts at weathering, it just some testing on ald wagons so I can get the hang of it before I attack the expensive stuff! Only up to the edge of the door has been done. It has wash of burnt Umber and black that has then been sponged off with a make up sponge. There is some rust colour dry brushed on the raised edge of the door. I think it be a bit sublte. Same process but with 2 different colours either side of the door. I have been playing around with different styles to see what works. Also I must get better lighting for taking photo's.
Allegheny1600
Hi there, The PC car is looking good! The espee car is indeed subtle but nicely done. I know its early days yet so you've done the hardest thing - picking up tools and making a start, now just keep practicing and you'll soon build up confidence. Don't be afraid of going a bit heavier - a lot of US cars look to be in 'terrible' condition to British eyes, they certainly take a lot of hard knocks that then get rusty, the paintwork can fade a lot - it seems to be this kind of thing that they go for on the other side of the pond rather than general grime and road dirt that we often concentrate on. See: http://modeltrainsweathered.com/ for plenty of inspiration! Keep up the good work, i look forward to seeing more examples! John E.
jhock
I had another try, this time on a container that will beused as storage shed in the Saw Mill yard on my layout. I am struggling a bit for light as the the little desk lamp I use has given up the ghost: Tried a few tips form the website you you linked to. Tried the rust streaking thing he does, not as easy as it looks but it came out OK.

jhock
Thanks guys, if the weather is OK this weekend I will get some shots out side. I need to get a new lamp for taking pictures, any ideas what the best kind would be? The PC and SP car are both trial runs, but there are some wood chip cars and lumber cars that need doing, but they where quite expensive so I need to build up the courage to attack them! CullingworthGNR
Agreed, those rust streaks are very impressive - I've got for a much less subtle approach on some of my wagons, see my blog! Seriously, that subtlely is very difficult to get when you're starting, so I definitely think this bodes well for future attempts. Are you using an airbrush, dry brushing or a mixture of both?
