Markmiller2008
Hi all is it still true to remove the little grey capacitor from the circuit board on a Heljan 47 before you pop the chip in? Ive just put one in a FL 47 and it fried the chip straight away? Thanks Mark
Paul-H
Hi Although it is recomended that you remove the caps, they will not fry a chip if you do leave them in, they only affect the running quality if they effect anything and most don't to any detectable level. Raffles
What type of chip was it? HJ 47's are fairly heavy on the current draw if I'm not mistaken.

It was only a cheap Hornby 4 function yet the 3 function Baccy one in my Lass o Balocymyle hasnt done the same
adge-peanuts
I have cooked plenty of Hornby chips by using them in Heljan class 47's. IMO they are a waste of time,so i stick to Bachmann chips now
Flood
Glenn and I have found the only chips that give consistant slow speed running are Lenz, either Standard, Silver or Gold all work fine. We tried TCS and had problems but Bromsgrove Models does have a CV set up for TCS chips in Heljan 47s. The main point we have noticed is this. The new Lenz Standard Plus chips have a slightly chunkier plug. This has caused two of our locos to behave erratically when the bodies were put back on. This is because the body pushed on the plug which caused the underneath of the socket to short on the chassis. Remedy, a thickness of three strips of insulating tape on all metal showing on the underneath of the printed circuit board. We have had two Lenz Directs burn out, possibly for this same reason, before we discovered the problem. Airthrey Park highlighted this same issue with Heljan Class 26s. RMweb Gold Dagworth Posted November 6, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 6, 2009 The Hornby decoders are only rated at 1/2 an amp. Heljan motors draw close to a full amp so will eat Hornby decoders for breakfast. Andi
47707 Holyrood
I use Bachmann 3 function in all of my Heljan 47's with no problems whatsoever. HTH
unsoundmove
I've used Lenz Gold on my Heljan 47's (about 5 of them) and no problems. Getting the wheels clean and then keeping them that way, however, is another matter...

Getting the wheels clean and then keeping them that way, however, is another matter... Now that Heljan use better quality Nickel Silver type wheels in all their new products since the Class 58 they ought to bring in replacement wheel sets so we can all replace the previous 'dreadful' brass affairs. A touch of the old Lima problem. I never have to clean my Bachmann or Hornby wheels, but the old Hejan ones I agree are a pain! I think this would make a lot more Heljan supporters very happy.
