Hi All

Ive have recently finished building one of the lovely knightwing portakabin kits, and was wondering whats the best method to go about painting it? I tried a small test area, with some neat enamel paint and am somewhat dissapointed with the result, any suggestions?

And any pictures are more than welcome

I built mine with the base missing and no glazing fitted. I then spray painted the whole lot with Halfords Grey primer and painted the legs and door with Games Workshop acrylics in silver for the legs and red for the door. (picture show it in primer - I can't find the picture of it finished!) :

When I built the pair for Heavy Traffic I sprayed them up before assembly in BR Wagon Grey with a Precision paints aerosol. I painted the supports and such by hand and detailed the interior after I had 1 side and 2 ends assembled.

Sprayed four sides with a drab green colour.

The roof and stanchions were painted a dark grey.

Picked out the frame of the door in black.

Feet of the stanchion jacks and lightly on the stanchions with dark rust.

Very thin wash of grime and around the door handle, kick strip

Picked out the window frames with a silver pen.

Sprayed all over when finished with Dullcote

Dont forget the rubbish on the roof, old tyre, papers etc., they all seemed to have them!

Mine got primer and then off white (based on photos of real portakabins). Take a close look at photos match your period as there are things that really bring them out - security notices, wires to the building and in many modern cases cutting a bit of etched mesh to fit over each window on the outside as is so often seen.

Don't forget the portaloo and well trodden path ...

Spray painted mine in N gauge using aerosols.. Walls, roof and struts seperately prior to assembly and then picked out door framing etc afterwards with neat enamel and tiny brush.

As usual, the photo shows where I need to be a bit more careful and redo some of the framing laugh.gif

Still needs glazing but hope this helps

Watching this topic with interest as the first job interview I had was with Portakabin Rochdale ( how many of you traveling on the Calder Line remember fields of them near Littleborough ). Now one thing has had me wondering about everyones models is that they don't look right and until I googled some pics I finally got it, the Portakabin logo, there all missing it, does anyone do a transfer ?

Well, I know this is an old topic, but when I was looking at building the Knightwing cabin it kept coming up in my search. It was so useful I decided it would be good to put some pictures of mine on once it was done by way of thanks.

I sprayed it grey primer, masked all the blue, sprayed with acrylic, then a darker blue on the door. i then did a slight overspray of white primer and picked out the window frames in black acrylic. A very light wash of brown black water colour was then applied and a coat of matt laquer.

I only had a limited space so I shortened it and put it on a 2 row brick base so I didnt have to use the legs.

I wanted the roof to look like an old flat roof and followed some of the images in one of the above links to scratch build that bit. I'm sure that yes they all have a traffic cone and tyre on top!!!

its styrene painted black and sprinkled with grinding debris from my garage floor, then washed with white and green with a little bit of foliage added.

the windows just have some images of newspaper scaled in photoshop with a grid overlayed to look like wire mash.

theres a bit more grass to go round the base, but thats where it fits!

I hope these are of some use, as the rest of this thread was to me,

Thanks.
