60B
I'm in the process of ordering transfers for my J72 which is to be numbered as either one Keith's (61c) or Kittybrewster's (61a). Does anyone have numbers for these around 1955 as internet searches hasn't turned up anything other than noting that they were allocated to the afformentioned sheds? Kenton
Kittybrewster: 68700, 68710, 68717, 68719, 68749, 68750, 69004 Keith: None, not in any other year either AFAIK
60B
Thanks Kenton, I did find out somehow 68700 was at one point shunting at Keith. And Colour Rail had a pic of 68710 at Kitty.
Kenton
Not an unreasonable assumption that it was on a working to Keith but "officially" allocated at Kittybrewster. Just as an aside my wife's grandfather was a driver based out of Keith. Though I never met him I'm sad to say. It is about the only thing to do with railways that she is interested in (that and her great grandfather died in some freak railway yard accident). 60B
I can't find a year for the Keith photo. Interesting fact about your wifes family.
sulzer27jd
Did these north east allocated J72's have the North British shunters step? john
60B
John, please dont confuse me further!! B) I don't think they would have, they were GNSR section.
sulzer27jd
John, please dont confuse me further!! B) I don't think they would have, they were GNSR section. The name didn't reflect where they worked but it was originally fitted on NB locos so the name stuck. Its a simple alteration which extends the bottom cab step backwards to the end of the bunker. An extra handrail is provided above to allow the shunter to ride on the bottom step and have easy access to the coupling hook. Worth doing as it makes them clearly a Scottish allocated loco. Not sure when they moved away but by early 1950's all were allocated to Kittybrewster. John

John Thanks John ... but I was trying to answer the question Does anyone have numbers for these around 1955... ... and by my reckoning "early 1930's" is just a little bit pre-nationalisation to count as "around 1955". Perhaps I shouldn't have been so vague about saying "In any other year" and really said "In any other year within 25 years of that date" However, do you know if that alteration was applied to any of those that were listed as allocated to Kittybrewster? As far as i know it was applied to all of the Scottish allocated engines. John
RMweb Premium ArthurK Posted November 23, 2009 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 23, 2009 All six J72s that ended up at Kittybrewster/Keith had shunter's steps and handrail which were fitted soon after arrival. Of the two other sent to Scotland 68733 never got these. Also take care two had odd chimneys. 68750 had a Y9 chimney in BR days and 68709 appeared with a stovepipe chimney adorned only with a strip at the rim. These lasted until withdrawal. The safety valves were without covers when they arrived on the GNSR section and their covers were applied by the sheds or the nearest works. Their version was a vertical flat tube around the valves. For full details see the RCTS LNER Green Books Part 8B. There are many photos in Yeadons Register Vol 43A including some in the GNSR section.
