LMS PUG 11221

Recommended Posts

I did a history of the sidings at Leys Foundry at Derby, (published in the Industrial Railway Society's magazine).

One of the snippets of information that came my way was that when Leys Sentinel was being serviced (don't know if because of a failure) they hired a similar LMS loco either from Derby or Burton. The only problem was that the LMS loco's chimney was taller than the Sentinel and it tore down some overhead power cables on its first venture into the works yard. I did not find any photographic evidence of the hiring, so cannot quote its number.

This loco was on hire to B.T.H. Rugby in the '40s (may be of interest....) One doesn't necessarily think of loco's being hired to industrial companies in that way.

That's a really nice pic- one of the things I've always liked about web forums (and not just RMWeb- I'm a member of several motor racing ones and find the same thing happens on a couple of them) is the sheer amount of gems like this that people are kind enough to share.

How common was the hiring out of Pugs etc to industrial users? IIRC, there was an article on L&Y Pugs in one of the railway mags a couple of years back which gave examples not just of the sale of locos to industry (one of the L&Y Trust's examples reached preservation by this route, having been sold to an industrial user in the early 30's), but I'm sure also mentioned some known instances of them being hired out.
