RSS Fetcher
Most of my modelling life I have been searching for a reliable coupling system and I must have experimented with half a dozen or so, with varying degrees of success. One of my first forays away from ? H/D and Triang when I was about sixteen was into 3 links- the old ERG ones with brass links that would have held back the QEII- and I had great fun coupling these up and shunting back and fro with ERG's sprung buffers, built with much the same design specs. as the chains. This system was abandoned eventually due to the usual buffer locking and a gradual upping of my realism requirements,, but the hankering for a form of this type of coupler remained, and when I started the current layout in its previous home- see my topic in the old RMW for its history- I pottered around with the concept of the 3 link system and eventually came up with a working compromise that solved the buffer locking problems. Basically it involved pivoting the hook and letting it contact with a bar on the adjoining wagon, allowing it to couple up ? and also to shunt with the hook pushing against the opposite bar. The attached pictures will show how it worked. The first three show my master wagons that all others were fitted against. Firstly in coupled mode. Then with the hook end dropped. Now in shunting mode. An underside shot showing the pivoting method. The one drawback of this ? was the need to cut a clearance gap in the wagon floor. Lastly two working vans, showing hoe the chain of one can be fixed on the bar to give a better eye level view. View the full article
