RSS Fetcher
Plywood, to be exact. Because the intention is to be able to carry the entire layout and lighting unit in the hand, I have bought the lightest grade of plywood we have available in Germany. It is called 'Pappel' which translates as poplar, and I'm using the thinnest sections that I can get away with. This will probably mean that I will have to use some cross-bracing to stiffen the baseboards, which won't be a problem as long as I can position them well away from any turnout operating mechanisms ... Most of these pieces have been cut out using a strong knife (box cutter) for the long cuts, and a mitre-saw for the short cuts. Where possible I have retained the machine cut outer edges for critical joints, where everything must remain truly square. I have also had a relaxing couple of hours on the lathe turning some 'bullets'. Scaramanga wouldn't have any use for these though, because that is just the name I give to my baseboard location dowels. I've made some extra ones, as well as some extra baseboard end pieces, so that I can insert another baseboard, between the station board and fiddle yard, to extend the layout at some future date. The baseboard end pieces were all firmly taped together and drilled, for the dowels and fixing bolts, on my drilling machine. This ensures that they will all later match up accurately in any combination. View the full article
