windmills
Hi folks, I have just fitted a 36-553 Bachmann decoder to a Class 60 loco, put it on the program track and my NCE handset tells me immediately that it has detected a short.....can anyone advise me what steps to take to identify the cause and rectify it? a98087
Does the rest of the layout work? You might have just put something metal across the track i know ive done it afew times, and did you test the loco before you fitted a decoder?, if no remove decoder, but in blanking plug and test. If the loco works on DC if possible try a different decoder, see what happens, also check the decoder if fitted the right way round, and that none of the metal pins from the circuitboard are touching the metal chassis, hope this helps a bit Dan
windmills
Thanks, Dan. Yes, first thing I did was to check the track....all clear. Loco works fine DC, but as soon as I insert DCC plug, I get a short! I have double checked this - DC no short, DCC immediate short. Plug is inserted orange wire Pin to socket No.1. If I reverse the plug, I get no short....this may be a clue and I am endeavouring to work it out (tho' I'm new to wiring). I have checked the wiring connections against two other Class 60s which I have and which work fine, but nothing obvious leaps out at me! However, I'm in this for the long haul....it won't defeat me! windmills
Success!? I had carried out all these checks to no avail before reversing the plug.........loco displayed no short when DC, only as soon as plug inserted for DCC, no trapped wires, no exposed wires, no damage, no metal objects.......nothing which would give rise to a short. So I reversed the plug (Peterm suggested this on another forum)and yes! the short ceased. I tested it gingerly on the program track - no problems. I have subsequently run the loco for an hour around my largish loft layout (25' x 8' approx) without fault - speed steps, different directions, all lights working correctly - so presumably the Hornby socket was fitted incorrectly at the manufacturing stage??
