Fiddlers End (Chrythorion Darfod) - a layout in N gauge

How did you built the boards?

Do you have a trackplan?

It looks quite good... I may do something similar, except with the fiddleyard at one end instead of at the back (rather rare to have an exhibition down here...)

Edit: sorry - just saw the plan in your gallery... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/36240-track-plan-fiddlers-end/

For full measurements would need to refer back to the notes, however it's a wooden frame, with a hardboard top to take the track, and an MDF backboard with slots cut in one area to allow for curvature in order to get the track from the fiddle yard into the main layout.

The board folds over, and in total is about 7 feet in length when open. I will also post a clearer image of the track plan in the main article itself.

On a different note for every one reading this article, now I know how to post photos, I might remove the link to the gallery too, though will keep the gallery as an alternative source for images.

Cheers.

Smallish update

Have updated some of the image posts with caption, I am hopefully going to post some more photos soon, and where possible they will also be captioned for descriptive purposes.

I am also looking at posting a video of the layout at some point in the future. Please keep watch for further updates on this.

Any how, please keep your comments, thoughts, opinions coming, I enjoy reading them, and hope you enjoy the layout and it's activities.

Cheers.

2nd Smallish Update:

I am planning, or at least aiming, to try and get some video footage of the layout working over the weekend, though I will make notification should the plan to do so be delayed .

Due to the unforeseen circumstances involving RM-Web at the weekend, I decided to forgo taking footage for the moment, though I have not in any way dropped plans to do so.

Please keep watch for future updates and announcements.

Ok, so I have taken some test footage, unfortunately my camera creates video in Quicktime format which on my computer is difficult to edit (the video has background noise from a radio which was on in the background, didn't think my camera had a microphone!)

I tried to convert the video into a format I could edit, but it seems my computer again does not want to play ball with me, so unfortunately for the time being, no video, but on the plus side, some new photos will be on their way with locomotives not yet shown on the layout... Watch this space! :D

As promised, some new photos from the layout. There are some more to follow as I have other locos not yet featured (including an M7 and a Battle of Britain)

Didn't DP1 mean Diesel Prototype 1, not Deltic Prototype 1?

I think you may be right on that, I know that they were going to name the locomotive "Enterprise", but the name never became official, and every body to this day, know's it more commonly as Deltic.

Here's the article on DP1 from Wikipedia...

Whilst attending the Chatham MRC annual exhibition as a steward (as a member of Tonbridge MRC) I purchased a secondary layout name board for the layout, which I though was excellent value for money in BR Western Region colours.

Hopefully it will be used as an extra name board to go with the surround board (seen in earlier photos on this thread) if it were to be exhibited in the future (Tonbridge MRC Exhibition 2012 being the first time).

I also had some luck in acquiring four books detailing the history and background of the Cambrian Railway, which I will use to expand upon the back-story of the layout, and add a little extra information next to the GWR section.

Having found a map of the Oswestry area of the Cambrian Railway, I have adapted it to show where in comparison Fiddlers End would be located were it actually a real location.

Below is a more localised route-map (based upon the style that can be found on Wikipedia to show specific railway lines):

Have had an invite to exhibit Fiddlers End in 2013, will not say much more until it's attendance has been officially confirmed, however this will make it it's second appearance on the exhibition circuit (Tonbridge 2012 being the debut).

Have also acquired taller tressells, so it should not be so low down as it was at Tonbridge. Also have a secondary name board to go onto the front (I think I may have already mentioned this, however, I'll mention it again ^_^).

I grew up in Shrewsbury near Oswestry and place names on the border usually have an English name, e.g. Montgomery, Welshpool, Newtown, unless they are really small places. So 1) Fiddler's End could be a 'Welsh' place name. And 2) Don't worry about the Welsh translation as that would have been made up in the 20th century to make it 'more Welsh' (as happened with Wrexham / Wrecsam). None of those Halts on your line would have had Welsh translations. Although the Welsh Language Society would be very pleased that you were retrospectively naming them and if it is a heritage line then they probably would now have names.

They don't have to be literal translations though. There was a row a few years ago because the Welsh 'name' for Mold near Wrexham translated as something like 'pig field'. Down here in South Wales Usk was given the name Brynbuga, which led to the memorable Western Mail headline 'Usk's been buggered'.

I'm not sure if this post has been helpful. It was meant to be :)

Thank you for your posting, it's very much welcomed. I ought to say that i myself am not Welsh (having been born and raised in South East England, I'm actually from Kent), but on the few numbers of times I have visited Wales, I have been fascinated by it's landscape. I did quite a large amount of research upon deciding to locate my layout in Wales (or near to the Border, but still within the boundaries of Wales), and decided that if one station would have Welsh translation of it's name, all should be treated the same.

In other elements of the layout, and very much in the future, I hope to find a way of creating locomotives of the Cambrian Railways Company, which I became interested in when I visited Oswestry in 2006, whilst vacationing in Shropshire. I have always maintained that the back story of my layout starts within the history of this particular railway company, which of course became part of the GWR in the early years of the 20th Century.

As always, please feel free to comment and post any time, as all are welcome to do so.

Cheers.

I thought the Welsh for Mold was Yr Wyddgrug, which translates as "The tomb mound".

LOCOMOTIVE/ROLLING STOCK UPDATE:

I have finally acquired a Manor class locomotive for the layout, I am particularly pleased as it fits in neatly with my Cambrian Railways backstory, as it was this area of the GWR that these locomotives travelled along.

Update: (well sort of)

The season of good cheer may be close at hand, but that hasn't stopped me carrying out regular maintenance upon the layout, I realise this is all I seem to post about, but as any good railway modeller knows, it's the maintaining the running of a layout that's so important. It's preferable for me that I post that the layout is in good working order rather than having to post bad news (though let's face it, no news is good news).

Also I know I promised a long while ago that I would at some point post video footage of the layout in action, and still plan to do so, I now have the software I need to be able to create the video which I should be able to post, though this will more than likely be in the new year, and as part of my preparations for the next exhibition in March at East Grinstead, where the layout will be in attendance (Tonbridge 2012 being it's one and only public appearance for this year).

So what does the future hold for Fiddlers End (Chrythorion Darfod)? To be honest with you, I have no idea, however it will remain intact for a long time to come, I have no plans to dismantle it in any way, shape or form, It was and still is my first ever exhibition layout, and though I am taking into consideration a possible project for the future, chances are there will be more to write and say about the layout for some time to come.

So as always, drop by the topic page for updates, feel free to leave comments/critiques/advice/shared knowledge, all thoughts are welcome, and I will endeavour to reply. If you have any other generic questions regarding an interest in the layout for possible exhibition, please contact me via the communications box in my profile, and I will be too pleased to liaise with you, however please note that I may not respond immediately, though I will endeavour to do so as soon as possible.

Good news, I've decided I am going to attempt some filming of Fiddlers End in action over the Christmas period, now I know what your thinking, and yes the whole plan probably will fall through, however, I have said I will have footage of the layout working, and by hook or by crook (as the old adage goes) I shall endeavour to take some moving imagery.

Any how, as the season of good will is so close at hand, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all the members of RMweb a very merry Christmas, and of course all the very best for the New Year. Here's to a bountiful 2013, in all aspects of life, but most of all railway modelling (*goes off to write list of further rolling stock and locomotives to purchase at future exhbitions*) ;) :) :D

Just taking this opportunity to wish everyone who drops by to view the layout on RMweb, a very MERRY CHRISTMAS, and of course all the very best for the NEW YEAR.

Watch this space peeps, updates coming soon, and if all goes to plan, some close up video footage of the layout running.
