59004 ( was Shedcombe....)
Hi all, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110465889364&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT I would like to win this auction, but can't bid no it, as I'm not based in the UK. The system blocks the option, as this business seller only wants to ship national. Anyone willing to try and win it on my behalf, up to ??100 maximum please ? The auction ends today, 16.09 GMT. I'm unfortunately off to work now. In case you would like to contact me, if only briefly, I have a mobile phone. +31 - 6 - 46 39 86 80. Thanks in advance. RMweb Gold DaveyH Posted December 11, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 11, 2009 All we've got to do now is work out a way to stop bidding against each other (though those members who sell might be a bit put out)
59004 ( was Shedcombe....)
Hi all and especially Chris ( Bruciethefish ), Just back in from work, but probably a bit late to phone. My daughter is about to give birth to her first child, so it's all a bit hectic. I'd like to express my utmost thanks to Chris for his willingness to help me out. The positive result thereafter is even cheaper as I had expected. Frustrating as it may be, from time to time, modelling British, with nothing readily available in the Netherlands. The great British modelling community and its members, that I've come to meet, online and in person, have proofed to be of so much value. Much more as just being part of a mutual hobby. I've made many friends over the years, and I'm glad there's still existing "helping out", in this world that's getting harder and more commercial. I may ask more, in general, as I can offer back, but I help out where I can, even if the balance will always leave some guilty feeling with me. Yes, the model in the auction for ??92 is a relative bargain, at 75% of thw BCC retail of ??88 plus ??32 BCC international membership for a year. Compared to the average shop prices for other 150's, it's at about 145%. It was available to UK residents only, which seems an odd choice by the seller, as he's a trader, also excepting PayPal and Credit Cards. A few others went through eBay as well, possibly by BCC members hoping for a profit, but I missed these auctions. Everyone on here can ask the same kind of help. No need to feel jealous Ian, just ask help like I did !!!! I posted a wanted ad in the classifieds section, some time ago, hoping to secure 2 of these models through RMweb members. Only if they were not intending to order one for themselves. Davy_N had bought one, merely as an impulse buy, and offered his up to me, without taking any profit. The unit of this eBay auction is now number two, and has been made possible by another RMwebber. I owe them both a lot, and am very greatful for their help. My layout ( working title "Falmouth Docks" ) will be run in 4-6 specific year settings, separately of each other, from some year in the 70's to 2008. The two units will become ex-Silverlink, FGW 150121 and 150127, with a lot of enhancements and improvements, for the 2008 fleet. Again, many thanks to Chris !!!!!!! --------------------------------------------------------- To all, Remember that I like to help out others as well, so if there's anything I can do from here in the Netherlands, don't hesitate to ask !!!!! RMweb Gold Russ (mines a pint) Posted December 12, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2009 Congratutlations all concerned! Now all's done it makes me wonder why some people cant be bothered shipping outside their home country? Is it just lazyness? - the Royal Mail website does make the postal rates just as clear as those within Britain? and Paypal does make it easy in any currency? smudgeloco
What a nice little thread. As to sellers restricting themselves to one country, I have had some real beauties I can tell you. Failing to sell to me when I won, even though I offered a UK address for posting to. As for myself, I have sold to people in China, a real nice guy, Canada, Germany, and have had requests for Italy, not sold anything to a Brit yet! Oh, hang on, I have, a Scottish guy called Bob, a real nice guy, but he lives over here in the USA.
59004 ( was Shedcombe....)
Thanks gents. Slow progress still, no granddad just yet. Will be a boy BTW ..................... trains <---> boys ............... oh boy ..... Wondered the same about not shipping abroad. It's not even to Bora Bora !!!! He's supposedly even a trader !!! Ah well, and extra ??7 isn't the end of the world, but indeed, one wonders ................. --------------------- Just received my Silverlink colours from Phoenix Precision Paints ( out of production colours, so took 50 ml tins ). Another great help from within the UK/RMweb BTW, trading the paint for a complete/mint/unused and now surplus Heljan 47714. Some Transpennine purple in this deal as well, for the upcoming fleet of Wessex/FGW 150's in the Wessex advertisement liveries. Artwork is being worked on. Now it's time for airbrush equipment as well. Life's just too short ............................................... Regards, Michel
Mickey
Congratulations on the impending deliveries - of train and grandchild!! Falmouth Docks sounds like one to keep an eye on for me Is it actually "legal" for a trader to refuse sales within the EU??
RMweb Gold Russ (mines a pint) Posted December 12, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2009 Its probably not illegal as you are not a bone fide 'trader' - you've got to remember most alot of ebay is an online car boot sale alot of people are just selling stuff their kids have grown out of, I dont think I'd have liked to post my daughters pram to antoher country!! I think alot of the 'tightening up' on Ebay has been due to business sellers using the benefits of tax free and less regulated terms. The Ebay concept was excellent as it started out in that it was a market place for selling & swapping low value stuff, its success has probably been its downfall really in some ways as its such a success story that everyone wants a piece of the action- the bigger something gets the more potential there is for problems and the tighter regulation has to be. There are options for the seller I wonder if sometimes they work out how much they can make on the P&P . Myself I tend to include the packing in postage charges if its a routine item within the UK as the buyer has obviously got choice & or a bargain. If its someone abroad who wants something I'm selling I tend to just charge for the stamp 'at cost' as its someone who really wants the item - overinflated P&P is a bugbear to me! 59004 ( was Shedcombe....)
Mickey, Thanks. Daughter and wife just off to the hospital now. Wait and see how long it takes and all turns out. You could be ( one of my ) port(s) of call, for advice on (freight) loco's/stock for the different year fleets, and possibly what years are more interesting to choose then others. I'd like the flleets to be largely prototypical. --------------------------- To Russ as well, The eBay seller is registered as a business seller, not a private individual. He has made 512 unique sales with a 99.5% satisfaction figure. No idea how long registered. Just checked the sellers ME page. Some quotes of this : "Cash Generator Luton Dinero Retail LTD is the online store for Cash Generator Luton. Winners Of Store Of The Year Award 2008 Cash Generator is a rapidly growing store chain with in the UK. We are the premier Buy Sell and Loan Store with in the UK market place. We have over 90 stores located the length and breadth of the UK. Please see our store locator map to find your nearest branch." And while foreign bids are blocked by the eBay system, due to the preferences set by the seller, there's in the FAQ : "Q: Do you ship goods internationally? A: Yes depending on the size of the item we can ship internationally. Please email in via the Ebay site for details of cost. Its important to note that we will only ship internationally if the customer bears the cost to do so." Anyone still following all this ? I had no chance in contacting the seller, as I had to go work in a minute, and would not get home before auction end. But even if he would have naswered in time, saying international shipping would be OK, then still the eBay system would block me out, due to settings, being foreign based. B) -------------------------- Chris, Could you please ask them about this contradictionary element in their sales ? Possibly he could still ship directly to me. This would leave you with some extra cash for all the service !!!! Regards, Michel

I'm sure you're aware, Michel, but Cash Generator (there's also a chain of shops called Cash Converters) are essentially an modern-day version of the old pawnbrokers, where people can trade almost anything in for some quick cash. Although they're a chain, I believe that each shop is run as a franchise operation, so it's maybe not surprising that the Luton branch don't want to ship overseas. There's a perception in the UK (not really true, of course) that shipping to other countries is a lot of trouble. Anyway, the good news is that, through RMweb, you managed to get something you wanted at a fair price. And as for the other impending delivery, many congratulations! I'm aware of their function. The unit is being stated as new though, in immaculate condition !!! I mentioned this in response to the question, if a seller can refuse deals within the EU, and this seller also proofing to be a business. And also because stating you will not ship abroad on the auction and blocking foreign bidding, but stating differently in the FAQ's. Yes, the pricefor the unit is fair. Although coming at ??115 in total, with ??7 national postage and ??16 foreign postage. The ??7 is extra hassle and cost, where there should be no need for. I'll let you all know about the other impending delivery !!!!! Many thanks. Regards, Michel
59004 ( was Shedcombe....)
Hi, A quick heads up, before rushing to work ......... again !! Have become a grandfather, little while ago, of a son of 3100 gram. All went fairly OK in about 3 hours. Hang on, the name is Jaylani Asher Jaroah Zachariah. So much for simple plain and easy to remember names. Ah well. As long as it's healthy. B) Regards, Michel
Steve K
That name is quite a mouthful (Jaylani?), but as you say, the main thing is that your new grandson is healthy. 3100g is 6lb 13oz in "old money" - not too big, not too small - just about perfect in fact. Congratulations to you and all your family!
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted December 13, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 13, 2009 Anytime I've wanted to bid for something that was "UK bidders only", I always found that after a quick message to the seller he was able to change his preferences so that I could bid for the item. That is where the "last minute bidders" trip up. No time to have such an exchange of messages.
Bloodnok
Anytime I've wanted to bid for something that was "UK bidders only", I always found that after a quick message to the seller he was able to change his preferences so that I could bid for the item. Despite living in Australia, I have a UK registered eBay account, with a British postal address, and a paypal account with a British credit card in sterling. All set up while I was living in Britain. I still find that sometimes I get prevented from bidding on an item. I'm not sure what eBay is using to detect this (I've even tried proxying my web connection through a host in Docklands, just in case, and it's not that). I've had more than one person saying "Well, with that lot, you should be fine" and not change anything, and leave me prevented from bidding. I don't really understand it - sellers don't seem to understand, even if I don't win the item, the fact I'm bidding means they get more for it. If I do win, then they aren't doing anything different - I'm paying in Sterling, and they are posting to Britain, just like with any other Brit... 59004 ( was Shedcombe....)
Anytime I've wanted to bid for something that was "UK bidders only", I always found that after a quick message to the seller he was able to change his preferences so that I could bid for the item. That is where the "last minute bidders" trip up. No time to have such an exchange of messages. Even though I only ever bid in the very last occasion ( what's the use to push up bids way before auction ends ? ), in such instances, I always contact the seller, and it has never been a problem for them to ship abroad. This time however, two things were different : - I only encountered the auction minutes before I had to go to work, and a few hours before auction end. No way I could ask a question and await a reply. - Normally when stated to sell/send only within the UK, foreign bidding is not blocked out by eBay. This time their system just blocked bids from a foreign IP. Both situations made me resorting to the request, which was met by a friendly RMwebber, and all was taken care off and paid for within hours. All happy, me thinks !!!!! Make indeed no sense to block foreign bidders from reputable countries, when accepting PayPal and even being a Business Seller. Posting out is posting out, no matter where to. Bruciethefish
Hi Michel, It's arrived, been checked over, wrapped & posted to you today. Let me know when it gets to you
59004 ( was Shedcombe....)
Thanks so much Chris. Your service is on par to non, but above them all !!!! Looking forward receiving it. Of course will let you know. The exhaust heatshields look indeed superb, as does the rest of the unit. The exhausts have to become opened up / piped through, as the unit is to be fitted out with two smoke units. B) A nice task ahead ( with a few others as well ). Modelling shouldn't be too easy.
