potential product

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Over the last few months i have been thinking about developing a product/model i have made and would like some advice on how to take it further. There are not many similar products on the market especially in 00 so i feel it is a gap that could be filled and many layouts would be suitable for the product. i have plenty of research material to hand but i need to find out if there are any manufacturers (cottage industry types) out there who may be interested in developing something with me. if not i may be willing to undertake the work on an individual, model by model as and when basis. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where i go next. Richard

So; are you looking to create a kit or an RTR model? What level of design skills do you have to create the necessary drawings for etches or moulds for a kit or CAD skills for producing a complete model? Have you got access to funds to invest?

These are all things i'd like advice on. I could do conversions of the current Hornby model myself and i'm planning a conversion of the old die cast triang model. i've realised that there is potential for a crane on many post-1960's layout as a detailed model rather than the play toy that Hornby currently do. i know some smaller manufacturers do specialise in model railway engineering/plant rolling stock and was wanting to find one who may be interested in this idea. the novelty value would be a big plus i think. and there is added potential with things like tool vans etc

I think this then, therefore, comes down to a product you'd like to have rather than one you'd have the capability to produce. If it's the former then work on converting one as you say and think through what knowledge you'd need to acquire as you go through that process.

i converted one last year for the rmweb challenge and was very pleased with the results. i'm now in the process of building one with a full size jib and appropriate jib runners etc. i still feel i can improve on my challenge offering. Thanks for the support.

If it's something YOU want, go for it.

Life is too short, etc etc etc.

I'm looking into doing Falcon in 7mm scale at the mo, after trying, usuccessfully, to get anyone interested in doing it for me.

Best of luck.

Being a OO gauge modeller and relative newby to bashing then I would suggest that looking at the BDC on offer for OO gauge then there's only one thing for it

Produce a completely new crane with runners AND then introduce as a series following up Mess vans and Tool vans

You have obviously got Steam and Diesel Cranes as variants and their relative changes in liveries on the rest of the BDT to cover

GO FOR IT

you only have 1 chance at life
