DB Regio hires MRCE locomotives and takes over class 182 from DBS

Afternoon ;) .

Just as a heads-up to all fans of the German railways on here: For the next several weeks DB Regio's Franconian branch operates five MRCE class 185 engines on regional services from Würzburg. The reason for this is that the class 440 EMUs which were supposed to enter service this past weekend have yet to be certified by the Federal Railway Authority, which but will most likely not happen before mid-January. As of now I am aware of the following services to be operated by these 185s:

RE 4604

RE 4611

RE 4613

RE 4615

all operating between Würzburg and Frankfurt. Images can be found here: Photo thread on Drehscheibe Online

The engines in question are 185 552, 555, 556 and 557, with 554 serving as a backup. Interestingly, all these engines are fitted for France.

Also, DB Regio has now taken over all class 182 engines (which would be the class 1116 "Taurus" in Austria) from DB Schenker and operates them on regional services from Cottbus to Leipzig. Here's an image on railcolor.net: Click.

It looks somehow odd, such modern locomotives on n-wagens and Halberstadts! In the case of the 182, it hardly seems a better use of the machines than the freight was. Still, at least they have some purpose.

Did anything come of the proposal for some 143s to go to DB Schenker?

It does look weird indeed. However, the combination of "n" stock and Modus coaches - which does occur on the W??rzburg-Frankfurt RE services - looks even weirder  . On these sets the first coach behind the locomotive (usually a 146.2) is a "n" one.

The last thing I heard about this was that only three 143s are actually lent to DBS at this time. But I'd have to ask if there may have been any changes in the meantime, as this information is dated from mid-October.

A fellow railfan on Drehscheibe Online has now posted the duty rosters for the MRCE 185s: Click.

As a bit of advice of what to make of duty rosters like this one:

This roster has four "days", which means the following. Let's assume 185 555 is working the Day 1 services on a Monday. After completing these duties and spending the night at Würzburg after its last trip on RE 4629 it then works the Day 2 services on Tuesday, beginning with RE 4630 and terminating with the 34729 service at Bamberg, then to begin the Day 3 services with the 34730 service on Wednesday. On Thursday it then works the Day 4 services, staying overnight at Frankfurt. Friday then sees it slip back into the Day 1 services, ending up at Würzburg by the end of the day. On Saturday, then, it works the Day 2 services for that weekday - well, essentially just the 34729 service from Würzburg to Bamberg. Sunday, finally, sees it working the Day 3 services for that weekday, and ending up at Bamberg. As indicated, it then slips into Day 3 on Monday and ends the day in Aschaffenburg, continuing with the Day 4 services on Tuesday. On Wednesday, then, it works the Day 1 services again...and so on. Still with me?:D

Well, then - here's a couple of photos from today, with a rewarding amount of snow :D ...

...followed by 110 435 on RE 4521 from Fulda to Frankfurt Central - the "Crease" 110s are still alive and kicking!

Forgot to write down which 411 this was, but I believe it was 4011 090, one of the ÖBB-owned units, working the ICE 1548 service from Dresden to Frankfurt Airport.

And here we have 143 971 on RB 15222 from Aschaffenburg to Frankfurt Central - immediately followed by the primary reason why I had braved the cold and gone outside:

185 556 on RE 4644 from Würzburg to Frankfurt Airport Regional Station, with a delay of some 20 minutes due to signalling problems somewhere along the route. Interestingly, these MRCE 185s do not yet have any NVR numbers.

Good to see the 110s still hanging on to life. Can't be many left now I guess?

About 98 of them are left, most of these being "Crease" bodied ones.

Looks cold!!

It sure was  . I was initially planning to snap RE 4612 at 1512 hours, but this one was delayed so much that it terminated at Hanau or thereabouts and did not continue its journey to Frankfurt. Later, then, I was thinking about snapping the return ECS service from Hanau which had previously worked the 15101 from Frankfurt Airport to Hanau and would later depart Frankfurt Central as RE 4623, but after a few test shots I found lighting conditions were too poor already for snapping a moving train - even a DSLR cannot do anything. However, RE 4644 did come to the rescue eventually :D .

Thanks for the information Dominik. More left than I thought! I was lucky enough to see a couple of 110s in Munich when I was last there in June. They were being used to bring empty trains to and from the carriage sidings I believe.

Another follow-up to the MRCE 185 theme - these are still in regional service at this time, and I also just found a cab video from one of these which I understand was made in late January: Click.

There was heavy snow in any case which apparently caused severe disruptions, according to the driver's commentary. Note how the driver had set the computer's voice output to French for the sake of fun  - the hired 185s being fitted with the French equipment package.
