Dave777
Started pondering on my challenge layout and what specifically I'm going to run on it. The layout is a small through station with a couple of sidings and I'm wondering what I could legitimately shunt into the sidings for some reason, so would these be realistic or a bit far fetched? (this is 70s blue diesel btw) 1) 2 or 3 Pressflos (specifically the Bachmann 22 Ton 'Blue Circle' Railfreight Brown ones). Would these be seen in a short train like that? 2) A single Bachmann 100 ton TEA bogie crude oil tanker - is there a suitable reason why one might be left in a siding overnight? I was thinking about some sort of brake problem but is there an operational reason why one of these tankers might be shunted on its own? The fact that it's crude oil probably makes it unlikely to be filling a roadside tanker or container I suppose. 3) A departmental coach. Some sort of mess coach that I'll probably butcher from an old Gresley or perhaps a Mk I. Would these be seen out on their own or would they more typically have something attached to them (tool van, mineral wagon)? 4) When does one bung a brakevan onto any of the above? (not the coach as I'll make that a brake anyway). I've also got four grey mineral wagons and a couple of bauxite wooden vans as well, so do I need a brake van for those? 5) What colour brake van should I be buying, grey or air-braked bauxite? (attempting to show some knowledge there, might be making an idiot of myself ) I'm an 'about right' modeller but don't like to do something of 'Mallard-running-past-a-Voyager' wrongness, so as long as I can find a half-reasonable excuse to run the above I'll be happy. Many thanks, Dave.

In my first month of work for BR in May 1976 we set up camp at the sidings at Adderley Park to pre-fabricate the points and crossings for the relaying of Proofhouse junction. A class 25 delivered our mess coach, which was in grundgey black 'livery', to a rousing cheer, although we spent more time in the pub than in the coach. IIRC it was a Stanier brake/third originally. Sadly, by this time, tools and lighter materials came by road. Only the sleepers and rails were deliverd by rail, on bogie bolsters.

Many thanks, Dave. Firstly- although the Bachmann tank is marketed as a 'Crude Oil' tank, it is in fact a lagged tank used for carrying viscous Class B products such as heavy fuel oil. Crude oil contains lots of volatiles, and is classed as Class A (conveyed in a light-coloured tank). Such wagons weren't just used for oils, though, as CIBA-Geigy used them to carry resin to various locations such as Hexham and Barnstaple, quite often as single wagons...- though this would have been from the early 1980s, a spot of 'Modeller's Licence' could be used. Barnstaple at the time might have seen short rakes of Presflos, steel in Plate wagons for Appledore, banana vans, coal wagons. The passenger trains were usually pleasantly mixed rakes of three or so coaches and a couple of vans. Hexham in the same period would see mixed pick-up freights with a few vans, coal (in hoppers), cement hoppers (though these stopped in the late 1970s), ferry vans with chipboard. Threads from t'old forum on brakevan usage: My link My link I'm sure there's more, I'm never convinced the search finds them all. Briefly (i.e without getting into all the 'ifs and buts' covered by the other threads), you need a brakevan whenever you've got unfitted wagons, and it doesnt much matter what colour it is 1) 2 or 3 Pressflos (specifically the Bachmann 22 Ton 'Blue Circle' Railfreight Brown ones). Would these be seen in a short train like that? P - R - E - S - F - L - O. One 'S', no 'T' and no 'W'. I *am* going to get Andy to add that word (or to be accurate, its apparently limitless misspellings) to the same filter that edits out all the swear words
Dave777
How annoying - I searched on the old forum and couldn't find anything to help... mainly because I was using 'brake+van' and not searching with it as all one word! Thanks for the links. Aaaand I also Googled 'Pressflo' to check the spelling as I remembered that post you put in another thread (infact, it looks suspiciously like a cut&paste?! ) and I wanted to get it right. Since Pressflo produced so many topics I assumed it was correct! I didn't put the T or W in though, I knew that much.
