RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted December 18, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 18, 2009 Has anyone got any experience of using C&Ls 3rd rail bits, especially any photos showing the chairs and the side protection boards. Rather annoyingly their website dosnt contain any photos and I want to see how they compare with the scalefour society bits before I start buying components after Christmas. The scale four bits look very nice, but look like they will potentially be rather fragile and are very expensive (given that half the pack is taken up with London underground bits that are of no use.) Peco's components are just not good enough, so I was hoping to find out that the C&L parts are up to scratch so that I can go with those instead..... Miss Prism
The C&L pots are quite nicely cast, but I recall they needed a bit of filing to get conductor rail sitting snugly in the cradle. One of the base etchings is not the right size for one of the pots, but I can't remember now whether this affected the positive or negative pot. All C&L pots have a square etched base, so is not quite right for the 'traditional Southern' style clamps. (Edit: this might not be so in the production etches.) The LT ramp castings are brass, and not of the quality of the nickel Scalefour ones. The Scalefour pots include the very low 'end of bent rail ramp' pot, which C&L does not do. Certainly, the Scalefour pots are potentially fragile, but if intending to solder all the C&L ones, you'll need a clever conductor rail expansion strategy for the longer lengths. I think you'll find the Scalefour pots will work out considerably cheaper than the C&L ones.
