Retaining arches

Hi,

The latest 4mm diorama needs almost 2m of retaining brick arches as a background.

I don't have a cutting facility to fret/cut large numbers of identical arches and mindful of the cost of Wills excllent arches, are there alternate products that are almost as good?

Does anyone have anything suitable which I could purchase?

Thank you

Tim

If you are happy to use card, Metcalfe's viaduct kit can be converted into retaining arches.

An ordinary conversion

Using sloping batter walls (at 70 degrees)

And another view.

These were done using the PO240 viaduct kit and MOO54 red brick paper pack. The roof on the sloping batter wall type is shaped using a freehand curve, a 4B pencil and a prayer...

hi Tim,

I thought these looked quite good value:

But I have yet to try them out - I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has used the brick retaining walls listed (V13b).

cheers,

Keith

I would second the suggestions above about using Metcalfe Viaduct kits. I too used the Double Track Kit which is detailed in my Blog Previously I have also used the single track viaduct. I also have about seven feet of Townscene Walling. I might need correcting but I think the latter is now only available second hand so to speak. Regards Ray

Vollmer do this bridge which could be filled in:

You'd get 6 arches, although I would shop around for best price. I've used the N gauge version of this kit and the quality is excellent.

Alternatively...

I've got this too, and again you get 6 arches per pack. I don't know if it's available in OO though.

OK,

Many thanks for all the advice. I think that a combination of Faller or Wills arcades plus Faller S-Bahn ironwork with other assorted ironmongery will be far more interesting than a 2m length of plain arches.

When the backscene is being built, I will post some photos. The concept is an inner city coal depot and builders merchant - some very nice detail is available here:

I have used their items for years and really appreciate the quality.

Hi,

I buy direct from Kotol (they take PayPal). Some of their items are unique to Kotol but many are other 'cottage' industry products from the former Comecom.

I really like their individual bricks and cement sacks- hence the decision to incorporate a builders merchant in the diorama, this may sound a bit odd but many large cities had specialist traders selling out of urban corners. We had an old-fashioned building material supplier who sold bricks, cement, sand, gravel etc together with a domestic coal merchant sharing the other end of the yard. Both had high corrugated fences which were covered in bill postings and there was a set of unused tracks that once belonged to a lost railway connection.
