45584
I have replaced the front buffer beam by one in brass and discarded the cab roof provided. Work has started on the detail. The boiler unit will not be soldered to the running plates until most of the work has been carried out on it.
45584
The tender is now virtually complete. The first photo shows the steel frames. Unfortunately the white metal axle boxes supplied bore no similarity to the prototype and I have therefore retained the spring/hanger element and replaced the box parts by some scratchbuilt plastic ones. The rest of the time has been spent making the various details such as tank venting pipes, steps, doors, the tool retaining panel on the right side etc. The tender buffer beam was found to be 10mm too short and was cut out and replaced by a brass one fixed to the tender base. The final photo shows the tender briefly together with the engine. I am currently remaking the loco lubrication units I had previously made and fitted but which didn't satisfy me. Plenty still to do. 45584
Quite a lot of progress has been made this week although at this stage there aren't enormous differences to show. The washout plug holes have been drilled out and fitted, the supports for the handrails soldered in, the buffers built out of brass tube and soldered in place, a top feed made out of brass with feed tubes etc. lubricating points made and fitted, the sloping sandbox filler supports fitted and the body soldered to the running plates. 45584
This week the engine has had detail added to the front end, handrails fitted, various plumbing of different dimensions added, a fallplate and cab doors fitted, brake gear and most of the sand pipes fitted to the loco. I had previously assembled the valve gear and this has now been completed. The large visible sandboxes under the running plate have been soldered up and bolted to the chassis. I decided to take the easy option when making the dome and used 14 layers of 40 thou plastic card which I filed to shape. The safety valves are also in plastic card but neither of these will be glued in place until I have finished wielding soldering irons etc. It now has a whistle. Still lots to do. asa
Sorry to say I've only just caught up with this and I have to say the standard of workmanship is quite superb. I look forward to the next offering.
45584
As a little light relief from the WD and for days when it was too cold to work on the loco I decided to extend the GW theme by building a toad. I have never had one on any of my layouts over the years and I thought it would make a change from my usual interests. My standard construction methods have been employed and I hope the GW fans don't find it too offensive.
45584
I have now taken this project as far as I intend to go. I have fitted the remaining sand pipes and sand box covers. I decided to make the smoke box door in plastic and it has been fitted less the number plate which will be added later. Pickups have been connected to the isolated wheels on both loco and tender and a drawbar bolted between the two units. I don't believe I could improve the engine much more. It will have to await the warm weather now for spraying etc. It has been an interesting project and the last loco I shall build in this scale. Jon Fitness
Last loco? Is the fleet complete or are you changing scale again? Superb loco by the way and a credit to your skills. In that scale I bet the big ends clank like the full size ones did! Cheers JF
45584
Yes John, definitely the last loco in this scale although I have a couple of wagons in the course of construction which will also be the last. I have thoroughly enjoyed the modelling in this scale over the past 5 years but sadly various factors come to play in such a large scale, not least the size when it comes to exhibition layouts. Also, I (and those who are kind enough to help at exhibitions) am not getting any younger and I have had to limit the layout to one exhibition before I dispose of it. I intend to sell off the stock, and salvage whatever is possible from the layout for sale. I do not intend to bring the layout back to France after the exhibition. Yes, I am changing scale again and returning to where I started - 4mm. I have already acquired quite a lot of stock and I have a project in mind. Many thanks for your continued interest in the project which I am in the course of completing. Trevor.
Jon Fitness
That's a shame as your workmanship in this distinctive scale has shown it at its best. Good luck with returning to 4mm scale, it must seem like watchmaking after G1! Many thanks for sharing it with us. Where do we have the one off chance to see Hoghton Bridge then? Jon F. 45584
Hello again Jon, It is booked to appear at the Blackburn and east lancs show at Church, Accrington at the beginning of September (usually Guildex weeked). If you have the opportunity to get there I would be pleased to see you. Trevor.
45584
This wagon is a 22T non-fitted tube wagon based on a GWR design. It is in plastic card with some brass details. Due to the length it has an aluminium sub-chassis to maintain the shape.
45584
The tube wagon has now been painted and numbered.

45584
This is the last wagon I intend to build in this scale. It is a 22t plate.
Beatty 139
Hi Trevor Your work is everything that I wish to do with my own G1 modelling, I just wish we could have a dedicated G1 area to the forum as I am sure it would encourage others to show there work. I am working on a 12' x 3' G1 'micro layout that I can use to promote the Gauge at local shows but I keep getting diverted buy commercial G1 activities, unfortunately for own limited finances the only way I can fund building my railway is through self financing it. I have the horrible feeling I will spend more time watching trains and studying your railway at Warley than running the G1MRA layout. Kind regards Andy Mould 'Edit' I have only just read that this layout will only be attending one show, looks like I will be making a special visit to Accrington just to see it. 45584
Hello Andy, Apologies for not replying earlier but we have just got organised after making our way across the channel. I'm afraid I've given up trying to promote the scale although I have to say it is a superb scale for those who enjoy scratch building. If you make it to the show make sure you introduce yourself. I hope you will not be disappointed. Trevor.
Jon Fitness
Hi Trevor, looking forward to seeing the layout at Accrington; any chance of a sneak preview of the painted WD on shed? Cheers Jon F.
45584
Hello Jon, It hasn't been painted yet. Believe it or not I think we have had almost as much rain as you and it frankly hasn't been warm enough to spray. As soon as I get the chance I'll post one. Trevor. 45584
I have now painted the WD and finally added some transfers. Unusually I have not weathered it as, together with the rest of the stock, I am negociating its sale to be completed after the exhibition in September. I have to say I am not at all happy seeing it so clean but some people prefer clean locos.
Jon Fitness
Caught up with this superb layout at last! Saw it at the Blackburn/Accrington exhibition today and I hope Trevor will forgive me for posting a few snaps taken there as someone waaaay more accomplished with a camera than me was busy on Friday night! My fave gauge 1 layout.. Jon F
45584
Many thanks for those Jon. We arrived home at 2.00pm today. A round trip for the exhibition of 2022Km. We thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition and the layout behaved quite well considering it had never been assembled in its full length version until it arrived at Accrington. I have enclosed a couple of photos of the boards before and after loading and at the show. The layout has now arrived at its new home with a group of G1ers in Essex. They plan to develop the layout to their own needs. I wish them well. All my rolling stock has either been sold or is sold awaiting delivery and I therefore feel this is the appropriate moment to end this thread. Many thanks to those who have contributed and shown interest over the months. My next project beckons. Trevor.
Jon Fitness
Many thanks for sharing this layout with us Trevor. It was even more impressive in the flesh! All power to your next project . Cheers Jon F.
LNER4479
I will be very sad to see this thread end as I have enjoyed the highly individual modelling required to put together something on this (sic) scale. I hope the new owners continue its development in the spirit intended and we may be able to see it in its new manifestation at some point in the future. Meanwhile - if you're about to embark on a new project then I for one shall be tuning in if it's anywhere near the standard of Hoghton Bridge.
