RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 19, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 19, 2012 Does anyone know the rough dates that the Sentinels were displaced by Thomas Hill locos in military depots? Found a few pictures of ex MOD 4 wheel sentinels but not many in MOD use yet. I wonder if anyone will stretch one into the LMR 8 wheel job
BernardTPM
The 0-8-0 might be easier from the Knightwing 0-6-0 kit (or two!).
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 20, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 20, 2012 The 0-8-0 might be easier from the Knightwing 0-6-0 kit (or two!). Yep, sold one of those recently on ebyeckwhataprice which will nearly fund two of these! No it's the small ones I really want for a mini layout to go with Steve's NP 009 locos, what you might call fortuitous timing
Gordon A
If you want an LMR 8 wheeler give Mike edge a nudge. He came to Bitton to measure General Lord Robertson a few years ago. Gordon A Bristol
bigherb
A very welcome loco I'm still surprised it has taken so long to get a decent industrial shunter and now with the forthcoming Heljan Hunslet it looks like my fleet of Nellies are going to be retired. SM I'll ask my Dad, I recall peering over the fence at it around 1988. 50 years before then, my grandad was a loco driver at Holborough, so these pictures are fabulous to see!
Ron Ron Ron
On the one hand, great news that Hornby are setting to work on an industrial diesel shunter. On the other hand, this will be a product of the much discussed, "Design Clever" approach that Hornby intend to apply to most of their new product. The question is, what compromises will this value engineering produce? .
Adam
Does anyone know the rough dates that the Sentinels were displaced by Thomas Hill locos in military depots? Found a few pictures of ex MOD 4 wheel sentinels but not many in MOD use yet. I wonder if anyone will stretch one into the LMR 8 wheel job I'm not all that sure how many 4w Sentinels the MOD actually had. I get the impression that a large quantity of diesels were supplied during the war years (Barclays/Drewrys mostly) and during the 1950s so it's unlikely they'd have been in the market until after Rolls Royce had stopped had stopped production, i.e., when Thomas Hill had taken on the goodwill and designs - there are some details on what is actually a rather good Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Hill_(Rotherham)_Ltd . The short answer is mid-1970s, but I'm not convinced that it was Sentinels hat were being replaced. Adam Edited December 20, 2012 by Adam

halfwit
£57 for an 0-4-0......???? Judith Edge kit - £43. Les1952
The Industrial Railway Society Existing Locomotives books (1979 to 1989 I have readliy available) only give two 4-wheel Rolls Royce Sentinels with the MOD- numbered 242 and 244. Whether 243 was a third one that disappeared before 1979 I don't know, BTW they were built by Rolls Royce after the Sentinel takeover. There were a much greater number of Vanguards. The two Sentinels were rebuilt by Barclay in the eighties. I'm not sure when they were disposed of. All the very best Les Edited December 20, 2012 by Les1952
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 20, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 20, 2012 (edited) Judith Edge kit - £43. Tenshodo motor bogie (assuming that you want a chain drive loco as per the Hornby version) - £31.92 (Mainly Trains). Buffers (Gibson) - £5. pre order price on Hattons £45 so for a ready assembled loco pretty good value! If you want the ultimate then the Judith Edge kit is still fantastic value but would be in at least the £150+ range professionally built. So design clever £45 or ultimate model JE incl. chassis £80 or Hornby £45 plus a bit of your time Edited December 20, 2012 by PaulRhB
RMweb Premium Boscarne Posted December 20, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 20, 2012 IRS 'Locomotives of the Ministry of Defence' (1992 edn) gives the history of the two 4w Sentinels in MOD use as follows; 242 / 244 (Duplicate series) ROLLS-ROYCE 4wDH 255HP 242 RR 10242 1966 (running number carried from c /1986) (Rebuilt AB /1986) ex Thomas Hill, Kilnhurst, 6/4/1972; previously Manchester Ship Canal, DH28 Quedgeley; to Glascoed c9/76; to Caerwent 3/78; to Chilmark 5/82; to Andrew Barclay Kilmarnock, for overhaul 14/2/86; returned to Chilmark 5/12/86; to Radway Green, Alsager 17/2/92 244 RR 10244 1966 (running number carried from c /1986) (Rebuilt AB 6528/1987) ex Thomas Hill, Kilnhurst, 6/4/1972; previously Manchester Ship Canal, DH30 Quedgeley; to Marchwood 31/8/76; to Chilmark 12/3/79; to Andrew Barclay Kilmarnock, for overhaul 1/12/86; returned to Chilmark 22/6/87 Unfortunately I don't have details of what became of them beyond that.... The original Nos 242 & 243 were 150HP John Fowler 0-4-0 DMs built in 1939, No 244 was a 1963 Thomas Hill rebuild of a 1942 Fowler. Hope this helps, Clive. 2
AngusDe
I keep thinking I saw a 4w Sentinal at RAF Gutersloh 86-93, but I can't find any photos, most of my time there there were a 0-6-0 and a 0-4-0 loco there and I remember the distinctive sheeted/boxed in handrail area either side of the cab, but at 20-25 years distant memories could be playing tricks! [edit] and reading Clive's post my mind is playing tricks! lol! [edit] Angus Edited December 21, 2012 by AngusDe
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted December 21, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 21, 2012 In an ideal world for me, this would have been the 0-6-0 outside crank version, as seen at our local colliery line so long ago, but it'll do for me as it is....I see it is promised to have a 'scale speed' mechanism, so for my money the price is OK. I think three may do nicely. I don't see 'Design Clever' as an issue, it's not a prototype that's bristling with detail is it? I can add the odd handrail if I need. Well done Mr Hornby for this one.
RMweb Premium Flying Pig Posted December 21, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) £57 for an 0-4-0......???? RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 21, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 21, 2012 IIRC some Sentinels (or Rolls Royce) were used by British forces in Germany. When the forces were withdrawn any remaining locomotives were disposed of locally, probably for scrap but at least one was used in Holland or Belgium for a while.
