RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 22, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) When did the NE region cease to exist? The DMU at Leed Central is in blue livery, but is marked NE. I have never seen that before. The merger took place early in 1967. David Edited November 22, 2013 by DaveF
Leander
I've just got back from a very pleasant afternoon at a local exhibition in a nearby church hall, being held today and tomorrow, not Sunday. Just about 13 layouts and a couple of trade stands - so how did I manage to buy 2 locos, some rolling stock and various bits and pieces? A few more photos for this evening, the first three were taken from the train on a journey from Harrogate to Loughborough. I think the location of the first two is correct, unless anyone knows different. Looks like Tibshelf Sidings. Nice photo f the G&I tram but I'm distracted by the LMS Period 1 2-window coach. Was that one preserved or did it get away? And which part of Leeds City was that one taken? Was the rebuilding complete by April 1967?

Was the rebuilding complete by April 1967? Rebuilding was still very much in progress then. I think it was Leeds City, but it could just have been Leeds Central though according to such notes as I have I didn't go there on that day. Leeds Central cosed at the start of May 1967 so it could just have been taken there. Does anyone know the background buildings well enough to give a clear answer? David How about just past Lenton North Jn (just outside Nottingham)? There are a bunch of tower blocks just off Derby Road and there used to be a CE yard at this point. David Yes Dave, I realise it's likely to be City, although I don't recognise the building roofs in the background., I was wondering if it is City whether its Leeds City South (the former LNWR/NER) part or North, the erstwhile Midland Railway Wellington terminus. Peter Kazmierczak
There are only three places it could be with high-rise flats like those; Nottingham, Sheffield or Leeds. I agree with Rob that's it's Nottingham. The train is approaching Lenton North Jn. The signal visible having signal lever numbers 4,5 and 6 on that frame. The tower of Holy Trinity Church, Lenton, can also be seen in the background. Edited November 24, 2013 by Western Sunset

jonny777
Being both a meteorologist and a nerd; the skies on certain photos fascinate me almost as much as the subject, and especially the 9F at Leeds. I have been looking back through the historical synoptic charts, and there are only a couple of days in April 1967 when that sky is likely to have occurred. The 9th or the 22nd look to be the best fit, although the 12th is a possibility as well. As for the snow, I think only the 21st April really fits the bill. However, trying to date photographs in this way is rather hit and miss.
AberdeenBill
There is an interesting branding on the Grampus (photo 4 in post 87), which possibly reads: "Spoil train. The wagons of this train are not to be uncoupled"? Fine shot of a Deltic as photo 1 as well... Bill
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 24, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) Some more for this evening. In 1967 I had a holiday in France staying with friends who lived in St Avold. While I was there I had my 18th birthday,. My present from the family I stayed with was a trip down a French coal mine followed by a visit to the loco sheds of the very big coal board railway network. The photos I took that day were those were amongst the negatives I sold. While I was there I also had a day in Saarbrucken, just across the border in Germany. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 25, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 25, 2013 I wonder way the bobby is in that shot?, again fantastic photo as always Dave There were several about that day, I think they were meant to prevent enthusiasts from trespassing (or to be more exact from spilling onto the running lines), whilst making sure they got a good view.
