RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted November 27, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2013 The only time I ever went abroad with my father was a day trip by hoovercraft (!) to Calais. The trip out was choppy, with sick bags being deployed by several others, and the return trip was cancelled, so we got a free trainride to Boulogne and came back by ferry!
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 27, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2013 Four more for this evening, 3 British and one French. All are electrics. JeffP
Loved those little BB12000's in France. I have both video and loads of photos of those around the Lens/Lille area, then at Thionville.
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 28, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 28, 2013 Something of a lucky dip today. The only thing they have in common is that they all form a part of my 1967 trip to France. Pirbright Junction 4VEP 7707 down ex pass July 1967 Dover SNCB Belgian ferry August 1967 Briey near Metz DeDietrich X3700 Aug 67 Dymchurch crossing RH and DR 3 Southern Maid August 1967 Hendon area Class127 up pass to St Pancras August 1967 taken from car alongside M1 In those days the M1 was not very busy. jwealleans
A lot of those vans behind the BB12000 look low enough to be ferry vehicles. Shame the markings aren't legible, but they're in the right places.
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted November 28, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 28, 2013 The pair of 31s at Ollerton; classic. That view is almost the same today, no 31s + 21T Hoppers though! P

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 29, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 29, 2013 Some more for this evening. 3 of them were taken from the family car on the M1. The first one is of an SNCF Calais-Dover ferry. Calais SNCF Cote d Azur August 1967 Trowell Class 25 up pass A6007 bridge over M1 in foreground taken from Dad's Triumph Vitesse August 1967 I don't know which colliery the next two are of. It was on the west side of the M1 somewhere north of Nottingham. If you look closely you can see some locos. Does anyone have any ideas? Tequila Sunrise
Not sure of the collliery name, but you are looking at Pinxton, with Selston on top of the hill on the left. Edited November 29, 2013 by Tequila Sunrise
Tequila Sunrise
In the first colliery shot, you can clearly see the MR's Pinxton signal cabin on the far left. Your car is just about to pass over the road from Pinxton to Kirkby-in-Ashfield, just south of Junction 28 on the motorway. The colliery is Brookhill Colliery. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 30, 2013 We'll start off tonight with a couple of shots of SNCF and British Rail ferries at Calais and Dover before moving back to Yorkshire. Calais SNCF Cote D Azur August 1967 Dover BR Maid of Kent August 1967 Pilmoor A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley Railtour Doncaster to Edinburgh on down fast coming to a halt 20th August 1967 4498 then reversed the train across the trailing crossover onto the down fast line before setting off north again. Agree - SLW for Down trains over the Up Fast, while Up trains ran over the Up Slow That's right, but what had happened on the ECML north of York some weeks before which required the down lines to be shut at weekends? RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 30, 2013 31 July 1967 - DP2-hauled train collided with derailed Cliffe-Uddingston cement train at Thirsk. Correct - the accident was while I was in France, I was surprised they were still clearing up 3 weeks later. David
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 30, 2013 And the Pilotman never gets to travel through the section until normal working is resumed! Oh yes he does (or rather did in those days) because he had to travel through the section in the right direction (or, exceptionally, go by road) in order to introduce the Single Line Working - but he then remains at the end where trains enter the section until the SLW is withdrawn. JeffP
That building behind the Cote d'Azur is styill in use as a passenger terminal at Calais. The Maid of Kent was the first ferry I crossed the channel on, circa 1962. I, too learned in, and had an Anglia 105E as my first car, BFU 416B.

67A
Hi David, Following lengthy delays with my Dent project which is now back on track its been a very nice interlude wandering through your photograph collection, some lovely little gems in there and really appreciated from this end as it brings back many trackside memories or days gone forever. Many thanks please keep them coming.
