dibber25
For anyone who lives close enough to go take a look, I'm told that the Oakville Sub is scheduled to be shut this weekend from Friday until Monday (8-11 November) for some work on the Dufferin bridge overpass. So VIA, GO and CN will all be detouring on the Halton Sub to Aldershot. Rare! CHRIS LEIGH
sjgardiner
I believe the old bridge at Dufferin is being dropped this weekend as it's now been closed to pedestrians as well as vehicular traffic. This will work for me, i am going out to my parents on Sunday on the Halton Sub, I'll have to check the train times to see if i can catch any of the diverted traffic. sjgardiner
Another landmark of the rail lands disappears.... Adrian Indeed, Though it would appear after some searching that unless something has changed, the bridge is not coming down this weekend, but at the end of the month. According to the Ward Councillor at a meeting last week, the closure for demolition is scheduled for Nov 30-Dec 1: The contract to construct the temporary bridge has been awarded to EllisDon Corp and construction could begin as early as Friday, Nov. 1. Atkins explained that Metrolinx will close the Lake Shore West rail corridor under the bridge for 48 hours Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, which will allow for the bridge to be demolished. The bridge will be replaced with three parts: a pedestrian bridge, a northbound traffic bridge and a southbound traffic bridge. http://www.insidetoronto.com/news-story/4182424-temporary-dufferin-bridge-to-be-complete-10-months-earlier-than-expected/ Chris, do you have any other information on the possible diversions this weekend, as Via's Reservia system doesn't seem to be popping up any warnings for this weekend about delays from diversions for me at least. -Stephen

I copied and pasted exactly what she wrote in her e-mail. She seems to be expecting to be driving on that Halton sub this weekend but she doesn't usually get to know which train she's working until a few hours beforehand. She drove it earlier this year when there was a washout on the Oakville sub. CHRIS LEIGH
Gerald Henriksen
It is not happening this weekend. The Toronto Star has an article from last week stating that GO Transit still hasn't decided what they are going to do the weekend it happens - full decision on alternative service options to be decided by the end of next week apparently: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/10/30/go_transit_plans_lakeshore_west_closure_during_weekend_bridge_work.html I would assume when GO makes a decision they will post info on their website but there is nothing there now. dibber25
Strange that VIA Rail is giving its engineers duff information, then. I always worry in these scenarios. When the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing, during out-of-course activities, that's when things get dangerous. However, the original e-mail does say "some work on the........overpass". I don't take that to mean that the bridge is coming down. I'd tend to think that is either temporary repairs in the vicinity of the bridge or preparatory works for the demolition. I'll wait to see if she works this weekend and where she gets sent. CHRIS LEIGH
Adrian Wintle
Is this the Dufferin Street bridge at the CNE? Yes. I wonder if the stairs to nowhere are going to survive. Adrian
dibber25
Yep, she's e-mailed again, to say that she misread the notice and its at the end of the month. Sorry for the duff gen. CHRIS LEIGH
Gerald Henriksen
GO Transit now has their plans up on their website http://gotransit.com/public/en/updates/schedulechanges.aspx#LSW There will be no Lakeshore West GO service on Saturday November 30th and Sunday December 1st. Instead there will be limited GO service on the Milton line - 5 trains eastbound and 5 trains westbound. There will be no replacement bus service to the Lakeshore West stations. Also, GO will be running special trains this Sunday (November 17th) on all the non-Lakeshore lines to service the Toronto Santa Claus parade and Toronto Argonaut CFL Eastern Final (details at the same link above). sjgardiner
As a bump, this is actually happening this weekend, Reservia now shows no service to Oakville and delays between Toronto and Aldershot for the diversion. It looks like i may be free on Saturday to actually go up to the Halton Sub and try to get some shots of the VIA diversions, fingers crossed for OK weather and my timing working out! sjgardiner
I've been slow in getting pictures posted of late, but i did manage to catch Via 72 and 73 on the Saturday of the diversions weekend, wound up being a great hour at MP 30, two passenger trains and a pair of freights in less than an hour, i wish every day had that kind of traffic out there to enjoy!! She took three sets of equipment to Union station via the CP Canpa Sub but says that the railfans had missed it, and she saw no photographers.
