6959
I just noticed that there was a GWR railcar with number W8 in BR crimson and cream but also a Mk1 RFO coach with the same number W8. http://www.flickr.com/photos/64215236@N03/6325890214/sizes/o/in/photostream/
woodenhead
Pre TOPS that was possible. If you look there were probably a lot of duplicates, one that comes to mind would be the GW County class and the Western diesels though the diesels were prefixed D. Then there were the Hymeks which shared numbers with Castles.
Fat Controller
Wouldn't the GWR railcar have also had the W suffix to its number?
chrisf
It would, as would the auto trailer W8W if it was still in existence after nationalisation! Suffixes were introduced around 1951/52 to try and avoid confusion with new build Mk 1s but it took a long time to apply them to all coaches which should have had them. Kev_Lewis
It would, as would the auto trailer W8W if it was still in existence after nationalisation! Autotrailer No. 8 lasted until 1955.
buffalo
Wouldn't the GWR railcar have also had the W suffix to its number? In theory, yes, but I've not seen a photo of No 8 in BR days with the suffix added. Photos from the early fifties up to withdrawl in Jan 1959 show it never to have succumbed and always bearing W8. btw, as no one has said it clearly, the simple answer to the apparent duplication is that different types of vehicles were numbered within their own number series. Hence it was possible to have coaches, railcars, auto trailers, horseboxes and so on, all with the same number. Nick
