So there was a GWR railcar W8 and a Mk1 coach also W8

Recommended Posts

It would, as would the auto trailer W8W if it was still in existence after nationalisation!  Suffixes were introduced around 1951/52 to try and avoid confusion with new build Mk 1s but it took a long time to apply them to all coaches which should have had them.

Wouldn't the GWR railcar have also had the W suffix to its number?

In theory, yes, but I've not seen a photo of No 8 in BR days with the suffix added. Photos from the early fifties up to withdrawl in Jan 1959 show it never to have succumbed and always bearing W8.

btw, as no one has said it clearly, the simple answer to the apparent duplication is that different types of vehicles were numbered within their own number series. Hence it was possible to have coaches, railcars, auto trailers, horseboxes and so on, all with the same number.
