Leekmuncher
Hi, bit of a long shot I know but does anyone have a track plan for Moat Lane Junction near to Caersws on the Cambrian Coast line circa 1960? I have scoured t'internet but apart from a few photos which do not show the whole set up I have had no joy. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, John
Madcaravanner
Sounds silly but have you checked the old map websites these seem to have some quite detailed maps from the 1800's to present day ie the 1903 one at http://history.powys.org.uk/images/llanidloes/6insws2.gif Also the NRM has a collection of Railway maps you may be able to buy one from their archives
RosiesBoss
G'day, John, There's a plan of most of the track layout on page 256 of E.Lyons: "An Historical Survey of Great Western Engine Sheds 1947" (OPC, 1972). The full plan is shown on an extract from the 1948 Ordnance Survey plan printed on page 42 of R.W.Kidner "The Mid-Wales Railway" (Oakwood Press 2003). I hope this helps. RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted December 6, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 6, 2013 There's also a track plan on pages 75 & 75 of 'The Cambrian Main Line' by Derek J. Lowe (Book Law/foxline Publications). Are you planning a model of Moat Lane Jct? If so, that sounds brilliant and best of luck!
Leekmuncher
There's also a track plan on pages 75 & 75 of 'The Cambrian Main Line' by Derek J. Lowe (Book Law/foxline Publications). Are you planning a model of Moat Lane Jct? If so, that sounds brilliant and best of luck! Thanks for your reply, I'll try and track that book down. Yes my plan is to have a go at Moat Lane Junction in OO. I grew up in Aberystwyth (sadly post steam era) and my late father was a driver on the Cambrian Coast line so I have a great fondness for it. I have never built a layout from scratch before so am looking forward to it. I have 14' x 8' at my disposal in the garage, which has been boarded out and insulated ready, so just need a track plan to get down to business! gismorail
Might be worth you contacting the Cambrain Society at Oswestry , I know that there is a small museum by the old station in the town centre and I would imagine that someone there will have some knowledge to pass on possible track plans and working time tables etc

alanbuttler
Hi there, I can fully recommend Brian Poole's Caersws: Cambrian Village and also Gwyn Briwnant Jones' Talerddig in Great Western days. There are many people still in Caersws that worked Moat Lane Jct, including the chap who worked in the refreshments room who coincidentally used to drive my school minibus back in the 1980's - sadly I only found this out recently, otherwise my journey's home could have been a lot more interesting Good luck with your project, its on my dream layout list should I ever have the space! If I can be of any help let me know, my mother lives a couple of miles from Moat Lane so I pop back quite often and always take the camera. I did start a small boxfile layout of the East signal box, but didn't progress very far! I did however have a quick play with making a scenic background from stitched photographs, the surviving locomotive shed is in the centre of the picture below, its now a timber yard. If I remember rightly there might be a plate layers hut on the Llanidloes line still there as well: I've also got photos of track plans from the original drawings in the National Archives, I'll dig them out tonight for you. They are from Cambrian times though I think, back when the turntable was where the water tower stands. I've been collecting a few photographs over the last year also so if there is anything that doesn't come up in the various books I might be able to help out. All the best Alan
alanbuttler
Here you go, dated 1913 so quite a bit before your time period but might be of use for the buildings:
