Sign Painting

The alternative is to paint the raised lettering in the colour you want. No need to be precise. Let it dry and harden. Then paint the whole sign in the background colour and while it's still wet use a bit of kitchen roll to wipe it off the raised lettering. That, I think, is the usual way to paint etched smokebox numbers... as below. A bit wonky, I know, but the numbers are well defined!

Another method I use for small raised detail is as above paint with the background colour and then pick out the raised detail by painting with a cocktail stick.

A small amount of paint on the very tip of the point is surprisingly controllable.
