Radyr park and ride,

naturol

Recommended Posts

Plans are underway for my next project, fits onto a board overall dimension being 3.6 m x 2.4m taken some inspiration from an article in model rail a few months ago, and considering not having a conventional fiddle yard but a large folded and overlapping dog bone return loop, as stock will be a bit limited to two car units, the occasional coal train, and some test and infrastructure trains I hope the loops will stable enough to allow a running session without getting board,

The plan is to go DCC cobalt digital for the point work! have working signals and feathers, a back drop of trees where the river bank runs toward the centre of the board, and a car park along the front edge, the scenic breaks will be a bridge to the right hand side and trees, on the left a steep bank and again trees as the scenic break.

Track plan attached for comments please.post-9901-0-45759500-1388095637_thumb.jpg

Brilliant!

I was looking at aerial pictures of Radyr earlier in the year and considering if it could be utilised into a model

Although the last time I stood on the platforms at Radyr, there were 37s on unfitted fitted coal trains (16 and 21 tonners plus brake van) parked on the relief lines behind the station, in what is now the car park.,

But there again anything Welsh Valleys does it for me.

Will you be introducing a little bit of freight back into the area by way of variety?

Regards

Richard

General view looking north, the busy nature of the car park is one of the focal points but I can't find enough modern image cars, the choice is a bit limited, plenty of vans and land rovers, and new style minis, but no fords or vauxhalls, may be the odd vow mki golf will have to do.

By big brother just had a small rake of MDV s from slim lines kits, and there are still the couple of full rakes of merry go round hoppers of the old club layout cwm cwrw, which will run with 37s and 66s if I can run to a rake of new EWS hoppers then they will run to.

And I suppose you'll be after my Coal Sector 37/0 and rake of HEA hoppers as well for 'Speedlink Coal Network' traffic from Abercwmboi ?

.

Do you want any of my photos as well ?

Looking at the aerial pictures shook me, I had to check Google maps in case it wasn't Radyr. Where have all those houses come from?

Yes Mike, more like I remember it, though the Plywood Wonder box was there by then.

But it was quite a nice 'box and it had a proper Reading designed 'frame plus GWR pattern block instruments

Real Radyr - 40 years ago

attachicon.gifRadyr 1 1973.jpg

'naturol' and I were raised within earshot and walking distance of Radyr Yard.

.

An early morning air would carry the sound of shunting to our ears - now lost forever.

.

The walk along the banks of the Taff from Radyr Court Road to the rear of the shed was an assault course of potholes, fly tipped rubbish, brambles and rats the size of (and as ferocious as) lions !!!

And, in later years, courting couples - whose lunch time antics parked in a remote (they thought) spot alongside a big stone wall provided much entertainment for the Quarry end Shunters.

Sorry to hark on about the past but I do like 'Naturol's idea - especially as I planned and laid out the first ever 'marked out' car park at Radyr back in 1973, a 'masterpiece' of improvisation, missing wagon labels, redundant S&T concrete channel, and a Sunday for the yard PW gang.

I totally agree, how much can somewhere change! Well I know I go around muttering about just how much has changed.... but that is considerable!

I don't suppose the weather has been too pleasant this week, but the sun always seemed to shine on the days I visited - and the local railway staff were amazingly accomodating. I do remember being on top of a Crosfield demountable tank (with Trev and Audrey Mann) measuring it, when a herd of coach borne gricers strolled into the yard - the local staff were not amused!

I meant to include this, far from all my Radyr photos, but a selection http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/?q=radyr

25th May, 2004 - almost irreparable damage to my backside caused by an impersonation of Blondin atop a chain link fence.

.

At this time there were two Westbury - Tower Colliery  paths each week for Hanson stone trains, one employing Hanson hoppers, the other EWS MBA boxes.

.

Something else for you to ring the changes.

That is the picture I wanted, justification for four coaches and a run round. Keep. Hold. Of that bad boy,

Any news on his replacement yet ?

Solskjaer - favourite, followed by Sven, then Di Matteo, and then some Turk no one's heard of but has managed every club in Turkey except the big 3 and allegedly has a track record of sparking out his players.

.

Anyway, back to something more interesting - justification for running a Cl.47 and four.

When 37408 ran away at Rhymney, EWS ran out of serviceable Cl.37s for the Rhymneys - so 47839 was hired in on a temporary basis until a 37 could be revitalised (37419 IIRC).
