David Bigcheeseplant
Our club has now got a laser cutter and other than buildings my ideas turned to other things the machine can do and wondered why it could not cut wheel centres. Cutting the wheel centres from 2mm Perspex and fitting them to tyres might be an idea C&L provided me a while back with Exactoscale stainless steel tyres for 3 foot diameter wheel for which I plan to make manning wardle centres as the Gibson wheel look a bit chunky. Another idea is do make centres for the Dapol 22 can someone tell me how many spokes and wheel diameter. Has anyone done this or am I raving mad! Atso
Hi David, I had some wheel centres laser cut for some N gauge wheels which looked very good. They never made onto tyres though so I can't tell you how well they would run. However, laser cut cardboard wheels have been used in 2mm finescale for conversion of German steam locos but I can't remember where I've seen the website for this... Gt.Shefford
Would you be cutting the centres oversize and then turning them on a lathe to remove the taper? Jonathan
David Bigcheeseplant
Would you be cutting the centres oversize and then turning them on a lathe to remove the taper? Jonathan What taper 3mmPerspex is dead true when I but a square on it. The idea of using Perspex is that it would be quite hard compared to ABS also I could laser cut groves down the back of the spokes to put sorting wires for the Dapol 22 How many spokes has a 22 got I am sure its an odd number? Gt.Shefford
What taper There will be a very slight one caused by the laser cutting with a converging beam. Depending on how accurate I am when setting the bed height (focusing the laser) I can get the taper down to 1.5o Jonathan
