Guest
Second attempt! I've decided to make this thread to show the build of my new layout! It's being built to replace my previous layout (Whitecroft lane MK1), which has suffered warping issues, and is now beyond use! It's being set in the Southern region in the 1961-63, like the last one! And is also going to be just 6' x 1', same as the last one! This layout owes its (soon to be) existence to Hornby Magazine, who set up a competition in the summer of 2012 called the 3ft challenge! I entered my previous layout into this, and came 2nd in the under 16's section.I hope to have the layout finished by the 27th of July, in time for this exhibition: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/81476-compton-martin-model-railway-exhibition-2014/ I will try and keep this thread as up to date as possible, and post updates regularly! The wood: The plan (everything to the LEFT of the Y-Point is fiddle yard):

emt_911
Thanks Matt I'm in the research stage at the moment. I do have a track plan but want to get the details right before I start. Duncan
Guest
Thanks Matt I'm in the research stage at the moment. I do have a track plan but want to get the details right before I start. Duncan That's what I failed at with MK1; I used poor quality wood and didn't really think it through! Ended up with the layout warping beyond use! emt_911
The woodwork side I'm comfortable with. I really want to pin the layout to a specific area of SR about 1960ish.
Guest
The woodwork side I'm comfortable with. I really want to pin the layout to a specific area of SR about 1960ish. I'm okay with wood work, mainly as I study it at school! That's the one thing I'm not doing, as so much stock was allocated to different sectors of the region! So I'm sort of making up where it is, in the sence it's 'Somewhere on the Southern Region' to allow me to run a larger variety of stock!
Guest
Okay, it's been a little while since I have done an update, as I have been quite busy with school work and managing a cold I have picked up!However, I have begun wood cutting to form the frames: The boards are a little smaller than I originally thought, which meant I had to trim the length of the two side beams: I have also cut four of the cross-sectional slats, still got 6 to do!: The gaps between the slats are all around 8 inches:
Twright
Looks good, very neat. It's the same sort of width as Hiffton. Good luck with the rest of the cutting.

It's only neat, as the saw I use is very good! What size is Hiffton? Thanks, I may need it!
Twright
8 1/2 inches wide and the main bit is 6ft long.
Guest
8 1/2 inches wide and the main bit is 6ft long. So 6' by 8.5" That's around the same size as mine then, give or take a few inches! -EDIT: Not really sure what's there to disagree with, but okay! Guest
A LOT more research has been /is going into this layout than the last one! I have now decided to set the layout in area 71, more specifically, 71A (with frequent visitors from 71B). As a result, I've been digging through this database: http://www.brdatabase.info/index.php and have been making a list of engines allocated to 71A at some point during 1960-1963, and after sifting through the list I made, I have come to the decision that the layout is best set in November 1961 for a few reasons: 1) I have pre-ordered a Drummond 700, and as the last went out of service in 1962, I can't set it later than that. 2) This allows me to have a Class 33 on 'Passing through' duties. 3) I get the best variety of stock. 4) As the layout is going to be set at night, I had to set it in a winter month, as earlier nights mean I can justify shunting movements at night easier. I will also make a list for 71B (Where I live) So other possible, but more frequent, 'Passing Through' engines can be used. Below is the list so far for 71A, and I have only included RTR models so far, so I know what will be easier to obtain: Example to make list easier to understand: Class Number Name* / Date allocated to 71A - Date Allocated to somewhere else/Withdrawn *Optional Lord Nelson 30850 'Lord Nelson' / 8/1/49 - 18/8/62 Lord Nelson 30859 'Lord Hood' / 6/6/58 - 9/12/61 Lord Nelson 30860 'Lord Hawke' / 26/11/59 - 1/8/62 Lord Nelson 30861 'Lord Anson' / 15/6/56 - 6/10/62 Lord Nelson 30862 'Lord Collingwood' / 15/6/56 - 6/10/62 Lord Nelson 30863 'Lord Rodney' / 15/6/56 - 10/2/62 Lord Nelson 30864 'Sir Martin Frobisher' / 26/11/59 - 27/1/62 Lord Nelson 30865 'Sir John Hawkins' / 26/11/59 - 1/5/61 N Class 31413 / 26/5/61 - 16/9/63 N Class 31810 / 26/5/61 - 16/9/63 N Class 31816 / 26/5/61 - 22/7/63 N Class 31818 / 26/5/61 - 1/2/62 Terrier 32640 / 26/11/59 - 27/5/63 Terrier 32646 / 26/11/59 - 1/11/63 Terrier 32650 / 26/11/59 - 1/11/63 Terrier 32661 / 26/11/59 - 1/4/63 Terrier 32678 / 26/11/59 - 27/5/63 M7 30028 / 15/6/56 - 29/9/62 M7 30133 / 5/4/60 - 30/1/63 M7 30375 / 5/4/60 - 1/9/62 M7 30377 / 5/4/60 - 1/8/62 M7 30480 / 12/5/51 - 30/1/63 LSWR Class 700 30306 / 1/4/57 - 21/4/62 LSWR B4 30096 / 7/10/50 - 1/10/63 Q1 33037 / 26/5/61 - 1/10/63 Q1 33039 / 26/5/61 - 1/6/64 BoB/WC 34004 'Yeovil' / 26/5/61 - 25/10/65 BoB/WC 34016 'Bodmin' / 26/5/61 - 1/6/64 BoB/WC 34022 'Exmoor' / 26/5/61 - 1/5/65 BoB/WC 34025 'Whimple' / 26/5/61 - 25/10/65 3MT 82012 / 14/2/53 - 17/12/62 3MT 82014 / 26/5/53 - 17/12/62 3MT 82015 / 13/8/52 - 17/12/62 4MT 75065 / 23/8/61 - 17/12/62 4MT 75066 / 6/7/61 - 17/12/62 4MT 75067 / 23/8/61 - 17/12/62 4MT 75068 / 26/5/61 - 17/12/62 4MT 76006 / 10/3/60 - 25/10/65 4MT 76009 / 10/3/60 - 25/10/65 4MT 76010 / 11/3/59 - 25/10/65 4MT 76011 / 11/3/59 - 25/10/65 4MT 76012 / 1/4/53 - 27/6/66 4MT 76013 / 1/4/53 - 12/10/64 4MT 76014 / 25/1/57 - 12/10/64 4MT 76016 / 1/5/53 - 26/6/66 4MT 76028 / 1/10/53 - 1/5/64 4MT 76029 / 1/11/53 - 1/10/64 4MT 76059 / 10/3/60 - 27/6/66 4MT 76060 / 10/3/60 - 1/12/65 4MT 76061 / 14/6/59 - 1/1/67 4MT 76063 / 1/7/56 - 1/4/67 4MT 76064 / 1/7/56 - 1/7/67 4MT 76065 / 1/7/56 - 1/10/65 4MT 76069 / 1/8/56 - 17/10/66 9F 92205 / 17/1/61 - 24/6/63 9F 92206 / 17/1/61 - 24/6/63 9F 92211 / 23/8/61 - 24/6/63 9F 92231 / 17/1/61 - 24/6/63 9F 92239 / 23/8/61 - 24/6/
