Bargains?

Has anyone set themselves a target for obtaining stock/starting a layout in terms of cost?

Easy to say "I want it", but can anyone say how they did in reality: say total cost for getting a basic two or three train setup operational?

I have a 'cut off' point with just about anything where I just won't buy above what I think something is worth to me, and of course hope to get things much cheaper.

just curious to know if many people do this with model railways. New/Secondhand doesn't matter I suppose as long as the results something you are pleased with!

After  many  years  of  modelling  I would  say  that  Targets  are  very  easy  to  set  BUT  almost  impossible  to   achieve, when  I think  back  to  the   money  I have  spent on the   hobby  it  is  quite  frightening!!

Only  yesterday a largish package  of  American N Gauge  arrived,  the  invoice  for  which  was  quickly  removed  and  stored in a SAFE place  away from prying  eyes.

Yes. I set a £400 limit for a small N gauge layout I built a while back: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/67354-kato-unitrack-banked-curves-a-scenic-test-track-in-n/

That was to include the baseboard materials (a lot of which I already had), track, scenics and basic DC control. The budget ultimately only ran to a single train though! It was an interesting exercise in improvisation, in other words, seeing exactly what could be done for a set price. It was never 100% finished though.
