naturol
Having a few months of modelling time spare, and no current layout on the go. I took possession of the Cardiff bay model railway group partially built layout, upon the decision to start afresh. The layout comprised two boards each 4x2' with track laid and platforms set. I had no theme for the layout and set about the internet for inspiration, I will attach the various pictures that have lead the layout to progress, from the original boards collected two weeks ago to current state.
naturol
The platforms needed some structures, and I had taken on the job to do this some time ago, I collected some plasticard and downloaded plans of various goods sheds and platforms, but I lost focus and the buildings never materialised. Searching the web for buildings with character to fill the layout I wanted something initially to act as a scenic break over the line to the fiddle yard, a visit to Pontypridd during The rain last year had the building I needed cantilevered out over the river. This would be recreated supported on wills plate steel girders and would span the four tracks. Having a stock box of weathered blue diesels for Ranelagh bridge, had me consider modelling the 1970s and something inner city based, and derelict, this pushed me down the parcel and newspaper route, and Flickr produced some wonderful images.
naturol
This second picture of Wolverhampton low level station proved pivotal, this had everything I wanted, I searched more of this location for additional ideas.
naturol
Thanks to simon, a friend with access to a laser cutter, he had previously cut out a number of frets of a canopy roof truss, cut from clear Perspex, these were glued together with styrene strip to create the truss portals for the station canopies, Slaters plasticard sheets of 4mm corrugated plastic were cut up to produce roof sheets and were stuck to the skeletal frames with liquid poly,

naturol
Ok now I'm having problems all the pictures appear the right way up in my album but when I put them on here as attachment they invert. So I invert them in my album, but they don't invert when I upload them so. They stay upside down.... What's happening ?

naturol
This one has the Pontypridd building in a paper cad print outline set over the tracks.
naturol
The thread will follow progress on the scratch building of the structures over the next few weeks as I endeavour to finish the layout prior to Easter. ( and work out how to get the pictures the right way up.)
RMweb Premium Ray H Posted February 8, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 8, 2014 I'm pretty certain that the first picture in the second post is of Leighton Buzzard looking north. I can't work out the date although the north box appears to have gone and the Dunstable platforms are still there so it should be possible to narrow the timeline down a bit. RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted February 8, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 8, 2014 Apart from smirking ungenerously at your inverted misfortune, this looks interesting. Parcels traffic and trains do seem to generate some discussion on RMweb, so you should find plenty of contributions should they be needed.

Looking at the jam-jars, a Mk 3 Cortina, Triumph Dolomite and an Escort suggest 1971/2.
naturol
I have been off loading some stuff onto eBay to fund the next project, I had a network rail class 57 that I built from a Bachmann 47 a year before they released their own version, how gutted was I, anyway I ran it on sanatorium road, until I bought the bachman model last year, this left me with a loco that I didn't use, well whilst looking for the inspiration pictures I came across this picture of an intercity 47 on a parcel train, and low and behold I find a retailer selling bachman intercity body shells for under £20 with free delivery, So new loco to run in a true to life setting and to recoup the costs the bodyshell of the class 57 is now upto a £5 with a day to go, Yippee. naturol
The roof of Wolverhampton low level is somewhat different to that modelled, with more of a likeness to that at Newport, as shown below, paid a visit to a model shop today and glanced at the Bachmann brut trolleys, four in a pack, around £8 a pack, but how many would I need ?

naturol
This is the building I intend to model as the scenic break, the third picture where the river runs under the roadway is the justification for my model, next I will rough up the building on my CAD system and print onto a foam board shell to gauge it for size, I will scale it by the tried and tested method of counting bricks....

naturol
I think I may have worked out a way to stop the inverting that is plaguing my uploads, I have taken a picture with the iPad, which it then inverted, so I have now taken a screen picture of the original picture and will endeavour to upload this.
D9JEF
Isn't technology brilliant! Looking good though, I am particularly looking forward to seeing your model of the building over the river as the prototype looks superb. Jeff
naturol
I have trimmed down the height of the buildings so that the canopy just clears the coach roof, a bit more prototypical, the buildings are placed only for effect at this time but I hope you get the idea. I have made a rendition of the wall on Wolverhampton to act as a visual break on the front of the layout, next to it I am toying with placing the Bachmann low relief flats, as a further restriction on view, the layout will be set high up as Ranelagh bridge is displayed, so kids and those viewing from a lower level will find this restrictive,
