Cornish Triang Paul
To anybody who is considering preserving a mark 3 coach and wants the interior to have the correct ambiance in the form of correct seating. FGW are refurbishing its sleeper day coaches from September so if you want the correct IC70 seats for your 1st class coach, NOW is the time to contact them to secure them for your use. I feel that correct style seating is important for any preserved vehicle be it road or rail and adds so much to the presentation. Act now before its too late !
Bert Cheese
As good as they are I can't see many coffins being preserved...aside from the HST folk who may want something to stick between their power cars?
woodenhead
I think they will end up with open access operators once their time on the GWML and ECML is over, scrapping is some time off. In their hands tables can come back and more ambience can return.
'CHARD
FGW don't own these fixtures and fittings, they are Porterbrook's property, and the refurbishment contractor may stipulate that it actually retains them for other purposes as part of whatever contracts it signs. EDIT: however, in saying that, there are people in each of these parties well aware of the importance and significance of the original interior components, so I doubt they would be averse to their retention, the issue being one of storage space. The 125 Group (I think it is called) counts several career railwaymen in its number. Edited May 3, 2014 by 'CHARD
AMJ
Don't forget that many railway has replaced many of the Mk I sleeping coach with Mk 3 for staff accommodate. Would be great for a steam gala to include sleeping coach. Back on topic Mk 3 hauled need ETH and are only air brakes which would limit the use of them never mind that they are longer than older vehicles. 'CHARD
Plenty of MkIII coaches will be around for ages, let no-one be in any doubt about that.
37114
Don't forget a buffet coach is preserved already. Also seem to recall the NRM/RHC has designated an entire set for preservation.
RMweb Premium Kris Posted May 4, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 4, 2014 I would really hope that a complete set or more is preserved. They are such important vehicles for recent times.
Xerces Fobe2
Plenty of MkIII coaches will be around for ages, let no-one be in any doubt about that. Irish Rail are scrapping theirs, plug doors and all - what a waste! XF
37114
Irish Rail are scrapping theirs, plug doors and all - what a waste! XF It has been discussed on wnxx, basically the costs of regauging, changing the buffer locations and replacing the ETS made it prohibitive for them to be used elsewhere sadly
DLPG
The sleepers will end up being used on heritage railways to accommodate volunteers. There is one at Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

tomstaf
Apart from the sleepers at Shackerstone, Okehampton, Pickering and Telford, are there any other MK3s preserved/grounded anywhere? Cheers Tom
Zomboid
There are loads of the sleepers around the place. I'm sure there was one at the mid hants and another at Southall. Do the trailers with the prototype HST power car count? And don't the Mid Norfolk railway have a mk3 buffet in service?

Glorious NSE
Do the trailers with the prototype HST power car count? And don't the Mid Norfolk railway have a mk3 buffet in service? The 3x that support 41001 are all hauled stock Mk3s (TF, TSO, RFM?) - and yes I think the MNR have another RFM.

srihaggis
The 3x that support 41001 are all hauled stock Mk3s (TF, TSO, RFM?) - and yes I think the MNR have another RFM. MNR also have another mk3 of TSO spec I think, minus it's interior. It was used at a gala last Back to the original query, anyone wanting to store an interior would need to have huge space available to them. Coach seats are bigger than they look
298
There's a sleeping car at Sheringham which was one of the first preserved and that is sitting on commonwealth's Isn't there a test coach preserved somewhere? A lot of the SLE coaches are on Commonwealths because their BT10s were needed for active coaches. Test Car 10 was preserved at Peak Rail but brought back by Network Rail, but Bachmann have another ex-test coach at Barwell...
