Penrith loco watering

Recommended Posts

Penrith used to have 2 distinctive water tanks at the end of the main platforms, nicely located for taking on water, however where did the branch locos take on water?

The Keswick and Darlington branches had their own platforms adjacent to the down line. There was also a turntable for turning but where did they take on water? Surely using the main tanks would block the main line. I have checked old maps and as many photos as i can find but no evidence of a water column etc.

anyone any ideas?

Harold Bowtell - Main Line Over Shap includes the LMS (?)  line diagram which shows a Water Column just to the south of No2 Box between the running lines and the road to the then turntable - quoted as 42 foot.

Unfortunately no photographs.

The 1925 1:2500 map on the 'old-maps' website shows something in that position marked "syphon".

Ah!, I noticed that 'syphon' as well but thought it was something to do with the stream to the west of the site.

I must get that main line over shap book if it is still available. A location near the turntable would be logical as engines from both branches could use the turntable then take on water. Only 42 foot is a bit small as Keswick had a 60 footer.

I wonder where the water from the column came from? Maybe a pipe from the up platform tank?
