RMweb Gold mikes rail Posted May 24, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 24, 2014 Hi, I am more and more getting the urge to have a go at 2 mm finescale and reading through the posts I noticed reference to trail/ beginners packs from the association but can find no reference to them on the website. Are they only advalable at shows or can they be ordered online? Thanks for any advice Mike
Nigelcliffe
Shows only. They contain a complete wagon kit (but it is "whatever the shop has to hand") consisting of a plastic body and etched underframe, axleboxes (if required for the underframe, varies with underframe etch), buffers, bearings, wheels, and a very short piece of plastic sleepers for "Easitrac" and two very short pieces of rail. The packs are somewhat of a pain in the neck for Association volunteers to assemble, so if you can order from the mail order shops its usually easier for the Association's volunteers. You can get the wagon parts from the shop (ask if unsure and someone will help you put together a correct shopping list), and 2 inches of track doesn't make a micro layout ! - Nigel

2mm Andy
Mike, To add a bit more information, the Association is looking at making the taster packs available via the website, but unfortunately this is unlikely to happen in the immediate future. They are available from the 2mm publicity stand at some model railway exhibitions (next outing is Wigan on 7/8 June then Blyth/North Shields in late August). The packs currently contain a BR 16t mineral wagon (plastic body, etched underframe, wheels, turned buffers) and a short length of bullhead Easitrac. I appreciate that it's quite a trek from the Isle of Man, but there is a 2mm summer gathering at Kidderminster Railway Museum on 21st June. Our 'central' shop will be there selling a variety of products and there will also be 5 layouts and numerous demos (plus of course a bit of prototype inspiration next door courtesy of the Severn Valley Railway!). Hope that helps, Andy Hanson 2mm Scale Association Secretary
RMweb Gold mikes rail Posted May 28, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 28, 2014 Thanks Andy, have sent of for membership and track book and will order a few bits to play with when pack arrives, most likely go down line of soldered track as I have a vague idea what I am doing with that. 2mm Andy
That;s excellent Mike - welcome to 2mm and to the Association! We still recommend soldered pointwork for beginners to the scale, although there are also developments ongoing with our Easitrac turnout components too. For plain track, Easitrac generally wins hands down if you're modelling UK standard gauge. One thing to note is that the Association mail order shop that sells track components will unfortunately be closed for the whole of June because of family holidays. However, the other two mail order shops will still be open, so you could perhaps have a try at a wagon kit or two in the meantime. Feel free to post any questions (or photos of work) on here. Regards, Andy
RMweb Gold mikes rail Posted May 28, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 28, 2014 Thanks for the extra info Andy, will aim for wagon kit/ chassis first. Don't get much done on modelling front in summer anyway, work keeps getting in the way.
