bescotbeast
Whilst reading my recently acquired "International Ferry Wagons in Colour" by David Ratcliffe I came across a photo of an STS TSL Diag E288 tanker carrying Cresylic Acid from Croda Chemicals at Four Ashes. Now I know from speaking with Mike H that after Coal Tar had finished Four Ashes took deliveries of Bitumen in TTAs for distillation, the output would be from reading up on the process Phenols, Cresols and Cresylic acids. Now my question is can anyone tell me where this Cresylic acid would be destined for? I've used Four Ashes as an example but it can be traffic from any Chemical works really , whilst you've got your thinking caps on I'm also interested in Phenol as well. Hoping you can help me with my querry. Simon
62613
When I worked at Ciba-Geigy Industrial Chemicals on Trafford Park, they used Cresol or phenol in one of their processes. At one time, it may have been railed in, as there were a couple of sidings; but by my time (1985-95), these were used for the contractors cabins, and the chemicals came in by tanker. Pugsley
That would tie in with some photos on Paul Bartlett's site of these wagons at Manchester Ardwick.

The Lurker
and as a complete aside Four Ashes was regarded as one of the most polluted chemical site in Western Europe at the time I worked in the chemicals industry (c 10 years ago). Years of coal tar distillation waste had got into the groundwater. There were potential claims from Railtrack/Network Rail amongst others and the users/owners/previous owners of the site were negotiating the set up of an environmental remediation plan
