18B
Morning, having looked at a few "Railway Observer" issues and similar such magazines, they make refference to "Mexborough Stabling Point" in their intineries for depot visits. Has anyone ever photographed or recorded any loco's there? the second question is of course, why were they there? What with Doncester, Wath and Tinsley all only a couple of miles away? regards. Rivercider
The 'Shunter Duties' series of books published by the Inter City Railway Society included a section listing weekend stabling points and the number of mainline locos (classes 20-87) predicted to be seen there over the weekend. In the 1979 edition Mexborough is shown to be likely to have between 3 - 7 mainline locos stabled at weekends Sorry, no idea why though, cheers
18B
Hi, thank you for the reply, 3-7 mainline loco's that's even more than I thought, so well worth dropping in on for those roving tours they used to do in the 70's it would seem. Would love to see a pic though and know what they were for?
scorpion
I remember Mexborough stabling point being the highlight of Saturday evening journeys from Sheffield to Doncaster, usually good for half a dozen 25s,31s and 37s and sometimes more. Cant quote a source but my understanding was that it was overflow parking for Wath as there was negligible traffic at weekends and once fuelling and servicing was done they just needed space to park. quick example, 7/7/73 6834 6873 5172 5657
18B
Thank you for the replies, It would seem odd though as to why they'd take them from Wath, for surely somewhere could have been found to stable them? Where they possibly there in preperation for SAturday night ballast trains, or did they just reside there all weekend?
scorpion
there were no wagons stabled at Mexborough, just locos, back then they used to drop ballast mid week between trains, there wasn't the same concentration of weekend work as there is now, pretty sure it was just overflow parking
18B
quick example, 7/7/73 6834 6873 5172 5657 Of note is that all of those loco'd were recored on Wath earlier in the year, so quite possibly it was an overflow for Wath? The thing is however, Wath used to hold a lot more loco's in the 60's, over 40 on the electric shed, is anyone in contact still with anyone from Wath? Rivercider
While browsing Flickr looking for something else (as you do), I found this, while is does not explain why it does show a loco stabled there in 1981 https://www.flickr.com/photos/8708923@N03/12529375265/in/set-72157639944593635/ cheers
