brian777999
Which is the most popular coupler for narrow gauge model railways ? I am thinking of building some wagons in 009 and I am not sure what most people use in this scale. I have built wagons in O and OO and I always used three link couplers for these scales. bécasse
The "Greenwich" coupling is probably the best in terms of reliability and ease of use - and it is relatively inconspicuous. It comes as a small pre-blackened etch with enough couplings for five vehicles and costs less than £1 per vehicle - and being small, flat, and lightweight, postage, even to Oz, shouldn't be too excessive. The coupling frets are very easy to fold up and fit. Uncoupling is by magnets. A number of modellers of industrial narrow gauge prototypes in 7mm scale use them too, although that isn't what they were designed for.
Hobby
I suppose the Bemo-type coupler is regarded as the "standard" for HOe and by default 009, variations are produced by the major manufacturers (Roco, Liliput, Peco and others) and will work together if the height is the same (the major issue with RTR stock as even the same manufacturer has slight variables!)... The Greenwich is probably the best of the "coupling kits", being neat and unobtrusive, though Paul Windle does one as well and you can get packs of couplings from the manufacturers mentioned above and also Technomodell, who's coupling is as fine as Greenwich's and has a longer shaft, it's designed for use under their Saxon bogie coaches. Difficult to find in the UK though.
PLD
Both the Grenwich and Paul Windle are in theory compatable with the Bemo type. The Grenwich are finer in appearance, but Paul's are more robust and easier to assemble. Both are similar in price and about half the cost of Bemo... Southwold
Are there any pictures of the Paul Windle couplings anywhere on the web?
Hobby
Yep, quite a few, just search "paul windle couplings"
