RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 19, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 19, 2014 Hi all I posted this in Bargain Hunters as well but due to the subject matter might be of interest to some here: Ian Allan in Brum have a load of Morning Sun books on US railroads in their sale - probably at least 12 different titles. All @£20 most reduced from £50 ish. (Looks like they have come from their Midland Counties online shop) Keith
trisonic
Morning Sun books tend to be bloody expensive over here too...... Thanks, Keith. Best, Pete.
Adrian Wintle
The street price for a new Morning Sun book over here is $60 CDN, so £20 sounds pretty good (~ $36 CDN). Adrian

Maybe a 'phone call to Ian Allan; http://www.ianallanpublishing.com/our-shops.htm (Don't try any Midland Counties websites it looks like they've either been hacked or cyber squatted!) Thanks. Neville. There are still plenty in the Birmingham shop. (It's just outside New St station - 80 or so minutes from London Euston by Pendolino!) I don't know whether the London shop will have any, the Birmingham shop certainly has more stock of most things. Keith
Neville
Thanks Keith I will be making some enquiries when I get there I've been to Birmingham a few times always go to Cousins in the jewellery district and look for any tools that could be handy. Those books are great but very expensive to Aust about 100 dollars each (55pound). 20 quid is only $A36 no air freight costs if my suitcase is not over the limit!! Nev. brianusa
Having brought many books back, they can be very heavy to carry on. They can also be very heavy when one adds them to the usual baggage which one ends up having to lug around anyway. Each time we went back home we returned with various books but nowadays with all the added restrictions, fees and taxes it is more of a burden. Right now, I take advantage of the Book Depository's free postage to the US. Such a deal! Tastes change over the years. I have a modest library of US railroad books that I rarely refer to these days; some are desirable, some not but they take up shelf space and I doubt whether any one wants them very much. Brian. Neville
Hi Brian. I go to London every year to see my son and always bring back a few books some I throw in the suitcase and others I carry on with me in a small knapsack but I travel light when I leave and heavy when I come back but still come under the 30KGS allowed. I'm the type of person that likes to look in the book before I buy unless I already have had it recommended to me by someone who knows my interests. Nev. brianusa
Nev, I must admit it is nice to get your hands on the book but in our situation, its a bit difficult. To prevent getting carried away, I keep my interest locally to the Devon and Cornwall area and buy accordingly. Sometimes one is disappointed but overall I have been satisfied with purchases this way. Brian.
Neville
Brian. Yes I can appreciate that, it hasn't always been good for me I've bought some "Dud" books that is books which have virtually no interest for me. I model USA Railroads but because I go to London a lot and live there for up to two months at a time I buy books on London Railways. I have bought some books on British military railways as well, it's hard to control yourself sometimes when you walk into a book store like Ian Allen or the London transport museum. What I have found out about England that the books are so much cheaper in England compared to the prices in Australia that is any book even paperbacks. Nev.
