Attaching buildings to baseboards

Recommended Posts

I have several buildings I want to attach to a baseboard. They are plastic kits with a couple semi scratch built from pikestuff. They aren't exactly rhobust so I need a good way to attach them to the board. They don't have bases as such so there isn't much of a footprint to play with. What would be a good glue to hold them down?

What is the baseboard surface?  If wood I would say very sparing use of contact adhesive as this holds both styrene and wood - but be careful, too much and the styrene will dissolve, or at least soften.  Hot glue gun would also work but you have to be quick and there may be unsightly excess glue around the edges.  The fall back would be epoxy.

If the baseboard already has some surface treatment such as paint or texture you will have to ensure that this is well adhered to the baseboard otherwise the glued down buildings might just pull off the surface treatment.

Have you considered attaching styrene floors first?

If you glue your buildings down to the baseboard, they will be difficult / impossible to remove / re-site at a later date. This will be made worse as you say they are a bit fragile (not robust). If your layout is portable / moved much then consider gluing the buildings to a thin flat card, hardboard or plastic sheet base, wider / longer than the actual building, then fix the base to the layout with glue round the edges only, or a few track pins or small screws. The edge round the base can be hidden by paint / sceniced with grass etc.

A suitable glue is UHU, it doesn't set too solid and is clear. Just use little dabs on the corners / edges

If your layout is fixed, then don't glue them at all - I don't glue anything down, so everything is easy to move / clean / reposition etc.

hope this helps.
