Alcanman
For my first attempt at fitting sound, I would like to start with a Bachmann Class 66, which I'm hoping will be a relatively straightforward project. I would appreciate any advice, tips, photos, links, including fitting an appropriate speaker. Is there space inside the body for a speaker ? Thanks, Mal
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted July 8, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 8, 2014 Depends which 66 you have. Initially the body was not really sound friendly, so the space underneath the roof vent was solid, later they modified this to allow the sound to escape, it's still possible on the early bodies but more work. Alcanman
Thanks. I intend to purchase one of the newer releases, probably 66101 DBS (weathered). Mal
gridwatcher
Mal it will be pretty straightforward but a little tight. Try the original 20 x 40 speaker but well sealed in Black tak/Blue tack around its back edge so speaker is sealed. You might try the bass enhanced 20 x 40 but you lose some for the hinging, horses for courses..... Whose sound are you using? I would recommend Bryan (Howes) or Legomanbiffo rather than the original SWD/Bachmann recording which is a bit harsh and annoying!

I've bought the latest release Bachmann DBS 66101 which I've run in on dc. The body has small openings in the roof underneath the roof grill, as mentioned above by Beast66006. I've also bought a 21pin Legomanbiffo decoder and low profile 20x40mm speaker, so I'm hoping the installation will be reasonably straightforward as this will be my first attempt. Any tips for removing the body? I'm aware of the 4 screws and clips around the cab ends. Mal
gridwatcher
Is it 4 screws I forget. Yeah. You are right and clips dead centre on cabs which locate quite poorly?. There should be a recess in the body block where speaker can sit if new style 21 pin chassis. If a speaker not contained in its own box then make a ring of blue/blacktak and press speaker down into it to seal it (Cone upwards obviously) Still worth locating the speaker if in it's own box (bass enhanced type etc) with a little blue/blacktak so it doesn't buzz and vibrate. Once you get the hang locos like that can be done in 10 mins. Should be pretty loud too.
Alcanman
Thanks again Grid for the info and help, much appreciated. Mal
Alcanman
Job done. Decoder and speaker dropped straight in, took longer to remove the body shell! Sounds great and very loud. I hope this will be the first of many .
charliepetty
Did you make the speaker 'Air Tight' in its housing, the sound will be even better if you do this. Charlie

Charlie How do l make the speaker airtight and what would l use to do this? I'm hoping to do a second 66 installation soon, so your advice would be welcome. charliepetty
How exactly did you fit the speaker, and which speaker did you use.
Alcanman
I fitted the speaker that came with the legomanbiffo decoder. It fitted quite neatly straight into the Bachmann speaker enclosure.
charliepetty
Using tacky wax or similar, seal the four holes in the metal frame, then seal any holes remaining in the black sound chamber, including where the wires come out. That should enhance your sounds!
