Evening all!
Recently i've been looking at stratchbuilding a boxcab for my layout as a bit of an exercise. Whilst looking around i saw a few american forums had done a challenge to build a boxcab and i thought it was a rather good idea. So with great honor i shall present to you (drumroll please!)

THE RMWEB BUILD A BOXCAB CHALLENGE!

The idea of the challenge is to build a model boxcab in any scale as an exercise in stratchbuilding or RTR detailing as a bit of fun so we all can improve our skills and add something differant to our layouts.

Rules:

1)You don't have to follow any prototype.

2)The model can hail from any country.

3)The model can be powered or un-powered

4)Post photos or videos of your build if you wish.

5)Everyone can participate.

and lastly....

6)Have fun :declare:

I hope to see your builds in the near future and i hope we all learn something
Good luck :jester:

Hmmm its more a challenge of modifying RTR stuff or stracthbuilding in all honesty craig so i dont think it counts unless you've detailed it? Sorry

But doesn't kitbuilding fit within those categories....?

And as for defining what a boxcab is, well where do you start....

It took me to Post #3 4 to realise what a boxcab was.... (I understand pictures :) )

From Wikipedia, there is this (snipped) definition :

A boxcab, in railroad terminology, is a locomotive in which the machinery and crew areas are enclosed in a box-like superstructure (from boxcar).

Great Britain

Most British diesel and electric locomotives are boxcabs but the term "boxcab" is not used in Britain. Instead, locomotives are referred to by their class numbers, e.g. British Rail Class 47 and British Rail Class 92. British diesel and electric locomotives are nearly always double-ended (i.e. there is a cab at each end).

So, am I right in assuming a scratch-built boxcab could be anything 'box' shaped, with some sort of representation of motive power (diesel, electric or steam ) ?

Stu (thinking waaaaaaaay outside the, er, box...)

It will probably be far to late to enter but two of us on the Lancaster Green Ayre team have plans for a model of the proposed Midland Railway Bo Bo  with Westinghouse equipment from 1908.  This would ahve been a boxcab and someone did a painting of it in one of the magazines last years, it was also coupled to the Siemens version which was a 2-C-2 .  They looked rather nice in lined maroon.

Pretty much, if I had to describe what I've seen referred to as this, I'd note that it had a square carbody with separate cabs or driving positions on each end, and no provision for carrying freight. This makes the distinction between them and Steeplecabs, Box Motors, Freight Motors, Cab on a raft, etc....

I'll have to have a go at this, though making one in N scale might prove difficult.

Should be fun!

There are plenty of Japanese chassis available, and drawing the body in Sketchup is a skill worth learning...

Funny to see a mention of boxcabs and Japanese in the same thread - I'm building a Japanese National Railways ED45 right now. Here's what the real loco looks like, photos of the model to follow:

Dear Gareth,

If not now (with the challenge called out), then when?

The modelling workbench is calling...

Happy Modelling,

Well seeing as there's no set time limit ok! I've got so many project on at the moment that it will be quite a while before I get started.
