Hornby M7 - Motor issues

Hello,

I while back, I acquired a latest tooling Hornby M7 at a local fair for £65. I was extremely happy with my purchase, until I test ran it (Dealer did test run, but I couldn't see the controller), and discovered there is a delay in the motor response from a standing start. There is no delay in changing speed when the loco is in motion, but starting from a stand still there is a notable delay in motion.

I was wondering if anyone might know what would be causing this, and how I could rectify the issue?

Regards,
Matt

DC or DCC ? If it is DC, could it be that it is fitted with a decoder and set for DC running ?

It is DC, but I'm no good with electrics, and don't know if it does have a chip or not...

I think the DC model has ballast weights in both tanks, but the DCC-fitted version has one of those removed.

I mean, I know it's DC, but I don't know if a 3rd party has fitted it with a chip...

I think the DC model has ballast weights in both tanks, but the DCC-fitted version has one of those removed.

If this is the case then you should be able to see the decoder by simply looking underneath, unless someone has fitted a directly-fitted decoder like the DP2X-UK.

No shame in that! And decoders don't all look the same, anyway, even when providing similar facilities. But they typically have at least 6 or more wires attached, all different colours, of course. Some decoders have the components visible on a small printed-circuit board, others have a shroud, which the manufacturer assures us contributes to keeping the components cool.

If you remove the body and get a photo of the chassis, someone will be able to answer the question.

The M7 in question is packed away at the moment, I will take a photo tomorrow!

One very simple thing to check on the box, if the catalogue number on the packaging: 'R1234' is suffixed 'X' that's a model that was supplied decoder fitted by Hornby. Among M7s, R2625X and R2626X are listed on the service sheet I have.

Do you have another Hornby loco (any type) with DCC socket but definitely no decoder to compare with? If your M7 proves to have a decoder fitted, you will then be able to unplug it, and by temporarily substituting the blanking plug robbed from the other loco may then test starting with the decoder out of circuit.
