N Gauge

Hi All,

I am currently building an 8x4ft OO gauge layout, it is in its very early stages and I am finding it very difficult to build anything other than 2 extended ovals with various sidings etc.

I am thinking about abandoning this in favour of N gauge, where I will be able to build something much more exciting in the same space.

The layout has to be on a flat board as it will need to propped up against a wall when not in use.

Does anyone have any ideas/tips/pointers or any other info they could throw in the ring to assist me?

Thanks

Alex

Hi Alex,

Without a few more pointers about what you want to achieve in terms of operations (steam? Diesel?  Freight?  Passenger?) or locations (rural, urban, station, junction etc) it's hard to offer specifics.

As N Gauge models are half the length of OO, they're in turn a quarter of the area and an eighth of the volume; so in theory a OO plan for 8' x 4' equates to 16' x 8' in OO, but of course as you don't scale if you have a central operating well it probably can't be halved in size...

cheers

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the reply.

The layout is a full 8x4 board that sits on my dining table, so no operating well.

I would like several continuous running loops, which should be easily achievable and far more interesting than OO oval loops.

With regards to era and locomotives etc, I am not fussy at this point. It is likely to be a jumble everything, both steam and diesel, freight and passenger, just whatever takes my fancy.

This will be a long term project for me as I work 2 jobs and have a young family so progress will be slow but it will give me something enjoyable to do, that I can build up over the coming months and years and both my kids have shown an interest so will be helping (mostly hindering I expect), I is likely to contain Thomas the tank themed stuff too!.

Due to costs I am likely to be looking at DC operation.

Thanks

Alex
