RMweb Gold sjrixon Posted September 15, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2014 I've been playing with Sprat and Winkle couplings on some trucks and so far so good.. So.. If I have a rake of coaches, I only need them on each end. So what would you do in the middle of the rakes? Fit some screw couplings? How fiddly are they to couple/uncouple when taking of a layout? garethashenden
It kinda depends on the dexterity of the person doing it. Assuming 4mm, tweezers will be needed. The best option really would be to fit two, one each on two vehicles, and try it out. I did that with some wagons and decided that I didn't want to use them on a layout with lots of shunting. RMweb Gold sjrixon Posted September 15, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2014 Kind of what I was thinking,. But, the only time the need to be done is when they are put on the layout.. These rakes are fixed with S&W at each end. Maybe time my B Set came under the knife and see what happens! Leander
For the intermediate couplings consider Kaydees or Hornby/Roco close couplings. Both fit into NEM pockets.
YK 50A
This comes up again and again. Further to the above, it really depends on which coaches and what you are trying to achieve. One thing to bear in mind that a good deal of SR and LNER origin gangwayed stock and all BR standard Mk1 gangwayed coaches would not have used screwlink couplings when attached to each other. What has worked for me is the Hornby/Roco R8220 on Bachmann vehicles and the Roco 40270/40271 on Hornby coaches. The locking function of the couplers cope admirably with the differing NEM pocket heights. Here are links to photographs of Hornby connected to Bachmann and Bachmann to Bachmann. peter220950
Kadee's are good because they enable you to lift stock off the track without having to untangle couplings, particularly if you have flexible corridor connectors that make getting at anything else quite difficult. Screwlinks may be prototypical and great if it's permanently coupled stock on a home layout, but Kaydees are more practical on an exhibition layout or if stock is being lifted off the layout frequently.
