Gary_Leeds
I am trying to service a couple of non working old A4 locos with the ringfield motor in the tender but am struggling to remove them to strip them to clean them up. I have seen the video that says push in the two tabs on the underside but am struggling to move them as I assume they are part of the cast block and do not bend very much. Is it a case of using brute force to remove them or is there a better way? Thanks Gary
andyman7
If you are talking about the standard tender drive mechanism from the 1980s and 90s, the motor housing is part of the chassis block and can't be removed. The order of play to strip down a motor once the tender body, weights and cosmetic plastic frame is removed is two take the wheels out (the geared wheels are a force fit onto the axle and can be gently levered off); remove the brushes and brush springs and then lever off the plastic face plate. Round the other side, the metal gear retaining clip can be popped out and the gear train removed. If you need to get the armature out a gear puller will be needed for the small armature gear but in my experience most issues can be resolved without this unless the armature itself is damaged or burnt out.
