DanielB
Interesting. I don't even want to consider the legal migraine that brokering that deal would be - my brain is mushy enough, thanks! If it goes ahead, I wonder what they'd be called? Canadian Chessie Seaboard Transportation? CCS? CCP?

dave1905
The big impact will be if the other class 1's start pairing up for self defense.
Adrian Wintle
The big impact will be if the other class 1's start pairing up for self defense. Didn't they already do that? I can't see that UP or BNSF could do anything in the west (so ruling out merging with each other or CN), due to regulatory issues. One of BNSF or UP merging with NS might be seen as too big as well. As far as I can see, that leaves CN+NS or KCS+someone as the possibilities . Adrian
DanielB
Would still be funny if UP and BNSF merged, though I don't see it as a possibility. We'd have BNUP and SPSF!
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted October 14, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 14, 2014 SPSF was a possibility back in the 1980s but the proposed merger was opposed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Fe–Southern_Pacific_merger

DanielB
I know, that's why I said it! SPSF at last!
Adrian Wintle
VIA+Amtrak? I also forgot Ferromex in the mix (since KCSdM is already owned by KCS). Adrian
Glorious NSE
I can't see that UP or BNSF could do anything in the west (so ruling out merging with each other or CN), due to regulatory issues. One of BNSF or UP merging with NS might be seen as too big as well. As far as I can see, that leaves CN+NS of KCS+someone as the possibilities . I agree you definitely won't see UP+BNSF, but I don't see the same issue with either UP+CN or BNSF+CN, you would still have two competing companies in the Western US, and two competing companies in Western Canada. IIRC BNSF+CN was mooted a few years back but nothing came of it? If that was ressurected then you would assume it would push NS and UP together. (Take the Southern from NS and the Pacific from UP, and it'll be fine ) There's an interesting op-ed blog from Fred Frailey on the Trains site though that suggests mega-mergers have more to do with the personalities of the folk in the boardroom than anything else, and he can't see more mergers being likely. An interesting take...
warbonnetuk
Seem to remember that BNSF & NS had a strategic alliance to run fast intermodal coast to coast. In terms of avoiding anti-trust any merger activity would likely to be an East and West operator booking up. As for names just go back to basics and call it Santa Fe and paint everything Red and Silver.....
F-UnitMad
I still hate CP Rail for their complete takeover of Soo Line in 1992 Now they want to "merge" with CSX Could this spell the end of the rather nice Dark- & Bright-Future CSX liveries?? which I have to admit I quite like There I said it - I like colors besides White & Red !! I feel so dirty now I blame Lance Mindheim and Chris Gilbert in equal measure

Mike Kieran
A UP/CSX Merger and a BNSF/NS/PAR merger would make more sense or a CP/PAR Merger. Merging in the same areas doesn't make sense. An Ocean to Ocean merger would make more sense.
trisonic
I just received in the mail an unasked for (but it’s really nice) free BNSF calendar for 2015. What can it mean? Best, Pete.
