Chester Northgate

Hi all, well........finally in a position to start a thread on my new layout, Chester Northgate. First of all, it will NOT be a faithful model of the original station, but a two level terminus loosely based on it. Scale is 00, using Peco code 100 with live frogs and DC. I thought about going DCC but as the layout will never leave home and only myself will be using it I decided on DC with switched sections. Timescale is roughly 1980s and blue diesel era. The trackplan follows, but basically it is two separate layouts really...not connected but both going into a small fiddle yard again on two levels. The scenic section is 8foot six, top part 10 inches wide and the bottom 14 inches. Baseboard construction is normal 2x1 softwood with a ply top and cork underlay. The passenger terminus is high level with 3 platforms and will have DMU services to Liverpool via The Wirral, Manchester, Wrexham and Birmingham. Class 25 service to Cardiff will run daily. The lower layout will be the freight yard, having a cargo shed, unloading crane and a small engineers yard.

Present stock is 08, 2 Class 25, Class 47, Class 108 and 2 Class 150. My previous layout, Port Dinllaen was a failure and I started again trying to replicate the urban grime of an inner city secondary terminus. The trackplans are below, the first the high level passenger terminus and the second the lower yard. Any comments would be most welcome as this is not only my first layout on RMWeb but my first proper layout.

Thanks Paul.

Laying track this evening in the lower yard. I have decided to limit the engineers yard to one siding, this will give me a little more scope to develop the ground area with regard to a spoil tip, track parts, sheds and various vehicles. The upper terminus is cramped between the retaining wall and the city backstreets (photos to follow). Talking of the terminus, I have spent weeks pondering the platform roof. I feel a city station, although a secondary one, would have an overall roof but that would limit my viewing angle. Suddenly I had the answer!! What I will depict is the old overall roof has been removed and a Bachmann crew are installing a new, modern overall roof. Unfortunately, they have got no further than erecting several stantions on Platform 2 and one complete roof truss spanning all three platforms. This idea also gives me scope to run two recently bought BDAs, bringing more steelwork to Northgate.

Anyway guys, back to track laying, more to follow soon

Roger

Sorry guys, am having trouble resizing my photos to get into the 1mb limit. I'm running Windows 8.1, any ideas out there how you do it, the photos range from 5 to 8 mb each.

Roger

Hi mate

I use my iPhone and email them to myself rezised, I'm sure there's a better way though, hope that helps.

Cheers, Paul

Hello there, all

have just sorted the problem with Flashplayer (won't open in Firefox but sorted with Explorer) and I've got into Image Editor....but does anyone know how I resize my photos from 5 to 5Mb down to the limit of 1Mb?

More track laying this morning and also some wiring of sections on upper level.

Looking forward to one of you photo experts steering me the right way, many thanks for looking

Roger

Great theme, a modern 'What if' on a closed station in a major city.

My Dad used to stand me on the wall at the west end of Victoria Rd to watch the trains below at Northgate, my grandparents lived over the road. I was too young to realise what was running, but I have a reasonable recollection of the area.

It's going to be interesting to see a modern (ish) twist on this........

Following with interest

Evening all....busy with more track laying on lower yard and I've just noticed that I posted the wrong low level trackplan.......OOOOPS :nono:

Below is the right plan, still don't know how to shrink my Canon photos from 7Mb down to 1Mb to post them. I can get into Image editor but then get stuck. Ideas would be appreciated.

The trackplan shows that the previous layout on the lower level was twin track but due to rationalisation the track has been singled with other track now giving access to the fuel storage and loco servicing area off scene. Northgate yard will only be small but with an overhead crane capable of lifting 30 Tonnes

regards

Roger

Hi Paul,

yes I saw your reply but I'm afraid I'm just a poor pensioner and don't have a mobile. I can get into Image Editor and xall up the photos, but can't figure how to resize them down to the 1Mb limit for posting. Will keep trying while PVA dries

I don't know what all systems you are using but I have i-photo and I have found that the easiest way to resize a photo is to e-mail it to myself.  When i do this it gives me the option of various levels of quality.  So I select medium or low.  When I get my e-mail I simply save the resized photo in a Picture file and Bob's your uncle as they say (Keep meaning to find out who bob really is)

Hi Rodger

Sorry only just managed to reply, no worries, it's not the most convenient way of doing it so hopefully we can both find a better way :)

Cheers, Paul
