1970s collier ship kits

Recommended Posts

I need some shipping for the quayside part of my 00 gauge layout, the ships I want are collier type merchant ships seen in the 1970s and early 80s or any other kits that could be bashed into service.

I have had a look online but haven't really found anything suitable only the 'Scalescenes' kit which looks a bit too modern.

Any help or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Ship models are quite big in 4mm scale. It depends if you are looking for a small coaster, a 'flatiron' collier of the type which was quite common on the Tyne a bit earlier than your period, with a parallel hull shape which could be scratch built quite easily as a waterline model, or a 70-80's collier, I recall some of these laid up at Blyth harbour and they were pretty big. You could try converting a tanker hull, I think Revell did a kit, and adapt this.

Revell's tanker was closer to N gauge than OO.

Your best bet for a hull is to have a look at some of the RC shipping kit that is about. It's not going to be cheap however.

It's funny that you mention Blyth Harbour as it is part of Blyth Harbour I am hoping to model, West Blyth coal staiths, are you familiar with them?

You could try Sylvan Scale Models - but take a blood pressure pill before working out how much a kit will cost you. You can get quite a good discount from Walters but they are still not cheap.

I am also looking for something that I can use as the basis for a 1910s ferry boat.

I visited Blyth Barbour a few times in the late 80's/ early 90's, it was very evocative with the no longer active coal staithes, submarines being scrapped, historic & laid up ships moored. These included Stephenson Clarke ships I see Wikipedia has a thread on these & flatirons.

I took lots of photos which are now stored in the UK, I'm en route to Canada with no access to them, had no time to digitize!

Have a look at the Artitec range, they might have something that would be a starting point. I have their n-scale passenger ship (sort of an excursion boat) and it is quite a nice kit.

Thanks Adrian

I have already looked and everything they produce is far too small - more river/lake ferry than sea going ship. Even back in the 1900s a cross Channel/North Sea ferry would be around 3ft long in 00.

Well, '1910s ferry boat' does cover a lot of ground...  I'd start by looking at plastic kits (in various scales) to see if you can find something with a hull that is close to the shape you want, although 3' does limit the number of those. Good luck.

The old Frog/Revell kit is still available from Novo and Eastern Express. There is one presently on ebay at £19.99, but you should find it for around the £12-£13  mark from good model shops. It is supposedly 1/130 scale. I modified one by raising the superstructure, fitting etched rails and a new funnel. Still have it, but stored away, location unknown/forgotten. I did find this via Google images. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/25080-whitborough-quay-oo/ Not too difficult a job to convert to a collier.

That kit (Shell Welder) has also been in Modelcraft (Canada) boxes.
