1/108 clasp braked 16ton MCVs

Hi.

I have a query that I'd like to raise regarding 1/108 clasp braked minerals (namely brake gear fitment and in particular how to model them in 4mm using the Ambis etch WV6_4).

Are the brake cylinders on these wagons (clasp braked MCVs) the same size? The Ambis information suggests cylinders of different sizes. I have never seen any mention of this before.

Thanks in advance.

They are of different sizes, but what these are, I don't know. The smaller one is for an Empty wagon, the larger one for a Loaded one; there's a small change-over lever on the solebar.

This shot from PB might be of use:-

Thanks for that.  I found that photo and did try to ask PB about it as I couldn't make out a size difference.  As I said the Ambis instructions are the only place I have found mention of this but they don't say what cylinders to use.

*PS I am only really interested in the mainstream MCVs with the CO lever not the mythical (rarer ones?) that had SAB brakes.

I have some ABS cylinders that I shall measure and I will determine the size of the cylinders intended for the Ambis etches.

Should this be in the modelling section I wonder? Perhaps when I start the modelling bit so here it should stay - while I remain in the armchair at least (just thinking aloud)

See Modellers Back Track Vol 1 No 5. There is a photo of the underside clearly showing the unequal cylinders.

There was a 15" cylinder for the empty condition and an 18" cylinder that was added for the loaded condition. ie Loaded used both.

It should be noted that the sizes given are the piston diameter. The outside of the drums would be four to six inches (not sure off hand) bigger.

Indeed Ambis referenced the Modellers Back Track article but alas I must have left my copy in the shop  :jester:

surely even 4'' bigger  would make the thickness of the drum 2''? They wouldn't be solid then? If they were then that would make them impossibly heavy wouldn't it?
