EddieB
Looking through some photos taken in August 1978, I've "rediscovered" a couple of what I had assumed to be an ex-LNWR brake van beside the station at Betws-y-Coed (I'm not sure if it was then part of the Conwy Valley Railway Museum). It doesn't appear to be part of the current collection of vehicles within the museum (neither listed on the museum website nor the historic carriages/wagons register) and I can't find a present location or match. If I took notes at the time, they're lost in the mists. The only inscription that can be seen on the photos appears to be "Car Park Closes 5:30". I'd much appreciate any help in further identifying this van and what has become of it.
garethashenden
Looks like a D17A, no idea what number. http://www.lnwrs.org.uk/Wagons/brakes/Diag017A.php
Mike T
Hi I visited the museum in the 80s and arrived just as they were breaking the last parts of this up :-( Mike
EddieB
Thank you Gareth and Mike. Not the news I wanted to hear, but what I feared when I couldn't find any examples with matching provenance on the Vintage Carriage Trust register. A great pity, as it didn't look that bad when I saw it.
Spitfire2865
Are you sure its a diag17A? They are very similar to the diag16.
Garethp8873
There is a surviving example of a six wheeled example LNWR Brake Van still. It was originally at the Severn Valley Railway until last year when it got transferred to the Crewe Heritage Centre. There is also this one at Quainton which seems to be a four wheeled example. EddieB
Another Dia 17B is at Mangapps Farm: http://www.ws.vintagecarriagestrust.org/ws/WagonInfo.asp?Ref=9715. Following Gareth's link to the LNWR "Webb Site" (love it!), I'm inclined to agree that it is a 17A rather than a diagram 16 - note the "V" brake stanchion and the planking/strapping detail - beside which the dia 16s would have disappeared much earlier. Unfortunately it now appears to have been the last surviving example of this type.
Spitfire2865
What you have there are two VERY nice photos of the rare diag17A brake van. I was worried this would happen....now I know my model is incorrect. Would you by any chance have taken any other photos? Maybe of the underframe? 298
An old pres. book lists it as a 20ton, no. 349.

Unfortunately these are the only two photos taken, and only in black and white at that.
RMweb Premium t-b-g Posted October 31, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 31, 2014 There is a body of an LNWR brake van serving as a hut/building at one of the stations on the Welshpool & Llanfair narrow gauge railway. That is (or was when I saw it a few years ago) in pretty good condition. Tony

All credit to the linked site, by the way - a very useful resource!
