Small Supplier Database

Recommended Posts

To help modellers and small suppliers to flag up their services and products I've created a database. Simply enter the relevant details by clicking on Add Record - here

There will be a permanent link above this forum to the suppliers entered. You don't have to be the supplier; you can just be a customer who supports the business.

This area is not for model shops (there will be a separate forthcoming database for that) unless they are offering a specific service or a product of their origin.

A couple of recent instances show that exposure closer to home could be beneficial to both modeller and supplier so I'll stand by setting it up.

I think you have done exactly the right thing, Andy, and I welcome your support of the smaller businesses.

What worries me are those who criticise you or suggest what you're doing has been done elsewhere. Why can't they say "Thanks" for putting yourself out to provide something that wasn't previously available?

Having dealt with the both the organisers of both UK Modelshops and the Supplier txt list, I would say that to be at all useful such a database has to be actively managed, both for new entries and changes of circumstances.

I agree with Bill's comments above, having earlier in the year compiled lists of UK and Continental rtr and kit producers.

The UKmodelshop site was full of entries for companies that no longer existed, appeared to exist but had no stock of anything on their website, or had been sold on.

If Andy, or others, are prepared to keep an up to date registry, then more power to them.  And if there is overlap with other sites, does that matter?  I am sure there are other sites that discuss Hornby or Bachmann or........

Get your details on it then.

It's a wiki-style database where updates can be made by others if anything's out of date and all revisions are recorded.

Andy - I have put in an entry for Appleby, as much as I know, which needs others to amend as necessary, but at least the address is right. However, can I suggest you add "transfers" to the tags, as many small suppliers specialise in this?

Will the new DB be supported by advertising, or treated as a source of ad revenue?

The nice thing about "supplier.txt" is that it isn't.

The purely for commercial ad sites, like UK model shops and it's equally bad US Model Shops version, are treated by google as no value "farm" sites, and are being deliberately dropped low in searches.

It's not been set up with that intention but I wouldn't preclude it if we were asked. I wouldn't say such pages would figure highly on search rankings anyway as there's not enough traffic. However if someone's searching for very specific suppliers on Google it would stand a fair chance.

Anyway it's free for a supplier to list themselves and it's set up for their benefit. Interesting to see that not many seem to be using it to promote their interests.

I think many are not great users of the internet (judging from lack of websites or even email addresses for quite a few) so it will probably require many of us, as past or present customers, to enter their details for them?
